Your expressions throughout this movie says it all. You were right. The 70's was the last great decade of filmmaking. It's always a pleasure watching somebody's reaction to seeing the DEER HUNTER for the first time. Depressing? Maybe. But to Cinephiles it doesn't matter when it's done this well....

Another Vietnam War movie was released the same year: "Coming Home" with Jon Voight and Jane Fonda. When Francis Ford Coppola was working on "Apocalypse Now" at the same time, he wanted his movie released first. But he ran into too many production problems. (See the documentary, "Hearts of Darkness"). Consequently, by the time "Apocalypse Now" was released, the Motion Picture Academy didn't want to award more Oscars to another Vietnam picture. It was too soon after "Deer hunter" and "Coming Home".

Good choices Jeff! Should have been a casting director…mine? Sean Penn or Ed Norton as Mike… DiCaprio as Nick and maybe Ben Foster as Steve?

I found the watch along from back in January. I'm going to try to watch that when I can find 3 hours and a good therapist.

I spent 28 working at ALCOA. The Aluminum Company of America. 22 of those year's I spent working in the Cast House working around molten Aluminum. For 12 year's I spent pouring 48,000 pound cruse's into 1,500 pound "Pig Mold's". That molten was around 1,500 degree's. It was on 12 hour shift rotating shift's. Because we had to get rid of 22 cruse's every shift, because we had a Smelter, and it is a continuous operation. Then for 10 year's I worked operating a Casting Unit. Making different sized Ingot's or Log's. It's very dangerous work. In fact my Great Grandfather was killed in the same plant on February 15th, 1940. Our plant is the longest continuously operating Smelter in the World. Starting in 1902. Metal from our plant was used in the Wright brother's motor, also metal was used in the Space Shuttle. The last 5 year's I was there I was President of our Local of the United Steelworkers. Then I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2013, and had to retire in 2014. The Smelter in this film is molten iron, so is about 3,000 degree's!! This film is hard to watch, but a classic war film.

Wow, congratulations for getting this monster of a movie edited!!!! A total accomplishment! Will watch now! I always want to warn reactors: "Don't feel pressured to do too much commentary for the first hour; it's the second two that people are waiting to see your reactions to! Just sit back and don't get panicked; the wedding WILL eventually end!" 🤣 (of course, after five minutes in Vietnam, playing Russian Roulette you wish that you and these guys could be right back at that wedding!)

Wow, you've even indexed the video!

FYI, during the movie, John Cazale and Meryl Streep were dating and they were the only two who knew that John Cazale was dying of cancer but John wanted to finish the movie anyway.
