Should have listed Patton and/or The Great Escape on this.

OG All Quiet! <3 <3 <3

Ran is a must-see classic, easily one of the greatest films of all time, but it's not really a war movie. More of an epic dynastic family drama (not to mention a brilliant Shakespeare adaptation.)

RFK Fan

I suppose BRIDGE will win this one outright (deservedly so) but would be thrilled to see a dark horse like GALLAPOLI claim the title. NOBODY is reacting to that...

JM63

Is this supposed to be a 9 day poll?

Robert Fontaine

Seeing as you recently finished Masters Of The Air. A 1949 classic 12 O'Clock High starring Gregory Peck, should be on your list in the future.

Clay F

Nice poll. Thanks Ames. I voted Platoon (1986) [AFI Top 100] [Oliver Stone]. One of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it in the theater when released in 1986. Charlie Sheen is a good narrator like his dad. Also stars Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker. Others I like: The Thin Red Line (1998), Empire of the Sun (1987), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), The Hurt Locker (2008), 1917 (2019), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

Akira Kurosawa’s Ran is an amazing movie and it has epic battle scenes, but I wouldn’t call it a war movie. It’s actually an adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Both have elements of war, but are more family/political tragedies.

Clay F

Spoilers on "The Railway Man" (2013): A more recent movie than "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) about the Bridge is "The Railway Man" (2013) (Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman) -- intense at showing POWs emaciated and subjected to torture. The Colin Firth character a British POW building the Bridge returns to Japan decades after the war to confront the Japanese soldier who tortured him. The Japanese soldier is played by Hiroyuki Sanada (a good actor) who is also Ujio (Katsumoto's right-hand man) in the Last Samurai (2003) and is in the new series Shōgun. "The Railway Man" (2013) is not top notch like "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957) but I liked it.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is a must see! One of the most powerfully impactful movies I've ever seen. And it's the true story told straight from the brave soldiers who were there!

David Crabtree

As a Marine Corps veteran, I think Platoon is garbage, but props to anyone that enjoys that film.

Catchermag

I backed a long shot, Das Boot. Assuming there are no German U-Boat operators in here that think the movie is garbage 😝

Michael Saville

1917 should have won best picture. I am 100% willing to die on that hill

James Rogers

Might be the cruelest poll I've seen. Great job Ames! Das Boot is probably my fav on the list (as long as its not the English dubbed version). All Quiet, Gallipoli, River Kwai, Hurt Locker, Thin Red Line ... Hell, they're all great watches. Don't know if I can handle Come and See a second time but it is an essential watch. Can't wait to see what happens.

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

I voted for "Paths of Glory". It's one of Stanley Kubrick's early masterpieces...and where he met his wife.

Teyon Alexander

Sad to not see Grave of the Fireflies. missed the list but I’ll cast my vote

AJ

I've only seen a couple of these. Looking forward to something new!

Greg Kipp

How is Lone Survivor not leading this pole!?

BRandonG

13 hours is so good

AstralCars

Threw in a vote for Paths of Glory. Truly great anti war movie that shows that Stanley Kubrick didn’t need to be weird to make a masterpiece (though I do love my weird Stanley!)

Thomas Wetherell

Ugh, so many good choices, had to go with Letters from Iwo Jima though. As much of a red blooded American as I am it is a great movie that shows that the enemy aren’t always monsters, many of them are human beings doing what they think is right just like us (even if they are misguided). Its companion piece Flags of Our Fathers is another great one to check out in the future.

Randolph Tirazona

This one ISN'T war but different sports: Trouble with the Curve (2012) lol

Paul Cox

1917 is a fine film and, if it maintains its lead, I think everyone will be happy. But patron-voted polls always seem to be a strong tug of war between recency bias and decades-old classics. I feel sorry for the poor films that fall into the void of being released 10-20 years ago. People (including me) don't seem enthused to revisit those yet.

Steve Maxwell

Even though "The thin red line" is scoring low it is one of the most unique films on war that has been made. A great cast, (one of my favorite actors, Jim Caviezel) also Amazing cinematography,

Magnitogorsk

Some great movies in there, but Das Boot is my favorite by far - in the end it was a very easy choice, though the likelihood of it winning is very small.

Retro Maven

A classic like 30 Seconds over Tokyo deserves more support. Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, what else do you want??

Jimmy Smith

Hey Ames I’m Jimmy new subby 😊, I know I’m late but my war movie suggestion Is Valkyrie 2008 starring Tom Cruise.
