Ok, so I really enjoyed this! It might be because it's what one of my fave movies, 'Cruel Intentions,' is based on. The performances were amazing, and I loved the technical work, especially how they used angles and circling to show the hunting of his prey—it made everything more powerful! Glenn Close's final close-up dissolving into black was incredible. Let me know your thoughts—I left it all in the reaction!

Catcher!!!! You're ship has finally arrived!! Great choice! I remember seeing this in the theatre when it came out. Think it got me laid but I cant remember. Regardless very sexy period piece with some great plot twists and wonderful performances. Especially John Malkovich and a very young Uma Thurman. Since you loved this Ames? QUILLS is a must see!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just finished the watch, thank you Ames. I actually love a good period piece like this one. The language they use is such a disguise for the reality bubbling inside, like at any second they will just explode with truth. In this one, it’s like watching Jason vs Freddie, with everyone else being the victims while they slash away at each other. The acting is amazing, and Michelle Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman….well lol The Director Stephen Frears does so many different types of films, some favorites being High Fidelity and The Grifters. Those are both well worth your time.

What a throwback! Literally haven't seen this one since the last century 🤣 Fun flick, although now it feels kind of abrupt when __ flips not once, but twice. (This might work better today as a 4-part BBC miniseries.) Favorite part of this is the wily veterans playing their chess match while schooling the rooks. (Always liked the letter being flung in __'s lap.) And what a crazy... um... climax? Enjoyed your commentary on the direction (esp. the angel/devil on the shoulder). Look forward to the next wheel spin!

Thank goodness! Watching this immediately! The actress, Swoosie Kurtz, that you're recognizing from Liar Liar also has a cameo as Sebastian's therapist at the beginning of Cruel Intentions (Tara Reid's mother).

I think my favorite Glenn Close performance is in Hook (1991). jk...but she didn't dare dial it in, even for that one.

I'm so glad you watched this one! It's an absolute favorite and I almost never find anyone who has seen it. I adore Malkovich and will forever be frustrated that he didn't get a nomination for it. Close and Pfeiffer did, which is great, and it won for costumes, set design, and adapted screenplay. Cecile's mother definitely did hook up with Valmont. The novel is very interesting because it's written in letter format, like the communication between two people, so it really must have been hard adapting it for the stage/film. Danceny irks me in that after having his own affair with Merteuil, he doesn't want Cecile any longer because she had one with Valmont. Talk about hypocrisy. If you like Malkovich and haven't seen it yet watch In the Line of Fire. He got an Oscar nomination for that one and I really think he should have won it. One of my favorite villain roles ever. He's absolutely terrifying.
