First up from the Poll winners is An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

************Light Spoilers Below*******************

What an introduction to a character! I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in a movie—you learn so much about Z. Mayo so quickly. What a way to grow up. Yikes. After sleeping on this movie and thinking about it more, I still feel the same way I mentioned in the outro, though I'm unsure where to place it among the romantic dramas I've seen. I don’t think its a top favourite for me, but i appreciate a lot about this movie. There were many special moments in this film, with great acting all around, but especially from Debra Winger and Louis Gossett, Jr. I haven't seen much else from him (or her), but these two blew me away. I also loved the visual style of this film, with its subtle but beautiful cinematography. The excellent storytelling gave us plenty of time to spend with these characters. There were some deeply vulnerable scenes and wonderfully developed relationships. While devastated by the tragedy, the movie left me with an uplifting feeling, which was lovely. I absolutely loved the ending—it was so romantic!

Drop your thoughts on this one down below!!!

SO MUCH to say about this film.. Debra Winger was the BOMB in the 80's. One of our generation's greatest actresses (see her FOR SURE in URBAN COWBOY and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT) Her and Gere notoriously didn't get along during this shoot (but you cant tell because their screen chemistry was amazing) Taylor Hackford (who later directed the wonderful RAY) did such an amazing job on this film. This was a MASSIVE hit in 1982. Think I saw it 3 times in the theatre and vividly remember making out with Julie Balder once watching it. On a separate note? Louis Gossett did win Supporting Actor for this role (deservedly) but need to point out how underrated an actor I think Richard Gere is. He carried this film. I think his good looks often overshadow his acting talents. This also has one of the best most romantic endings I've ever seen in a film. I even remember the audience openly applauding at the end in one showing...

With all the Christmas stuff in the reactorverse in December it's nice to just sit and watch a normal movie. A Richard Gere poll would be cool at some point

I'll definitely check it out, I've got nowhere else to go.

This movie is definitely all about Louis Gossett Jr for me. Powerhouse. And he won an Oscar for it.

This was the movie I chose as my Wheel of Movie Wonder entry earlier this year, and I'm glad you had a chance to see why I chose it, Ames. If you think Mayo's harshly-delivered line to Sgt Foley ("I'm talking to you, MFer") drew a lot of audible gasps in the movie theater back in 1982, you're quite correct.

Agree that was excellent acting by Gere (Zack) when he showed vulnerability breaking down saying he had no where else to go. You connected with the Zack/Paula relationship -- they were different. She was unique and a nice mix. He was unique. You recognized the "steers and queers" phrase from FMJ. Students at my alma mater Texas A&M in College Station used that phrase to refer to our rivalry University of Texas in Austin. This movie is not necessarily a favorite of mine (maybe because of the suicide), but definitely like the movie and have nostalgia, and think the movie was part of our pop culture in the early 1980's. I am entranced by Debra Winger in this. Further, Gere and Gossett = good acting. Zack had a plodding but positive arc. The Zach/Sgt. Foley dynamic ultmately had a good arc. I thought the suicide hanging was a little much, but maybe realistic. Sid DOR when he had 2 weeks remaining. I guess Sid thought he could provide better for his family (and be more happy) as a JCPenney floor manager in Oklahoma than as a Navy airman. The final scene is good. My daughter and ex-wife liked that final scene. Debra Winger is good in Urban Cowboy (1980) mentioned by RFK Fan. Not too many years after that movie was released, I worked where the movie takes place (Pasadena, Texas).

You should watch Debra Winger in Terms of Endearment

It was great seeing An Officer and a Gentleman again with you, Ames! I enjoyed your reaction and insights. Definitely not your typical romantic drama but a good story and great acting, especially by Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett Jr. (Plus, you gotta love the 80's hair throughout!) ***** SPOILERS BELOW ***** I love the chemistry betweed Gere and Winger, but my favorite moment in the film is during the final obstacle-course run, when Mayo abandons his attempt to break the course record and coaches Seeger over the wall. So satisfying and such an important moment in Mayo's character arc! Interestingly, R. Lee Ermey, the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket was hired as the film's technical advisor to coach Louis Gossett Jr. for the role of Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley. So that's how the "steers and queers" comment from Gossett's character in the movie came to be used by Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, five years later.

I watched this reaction a second time. One of my favorites of your reactions.
