I haven't watched this reaction, and I might not. I always encourage your enthusiasm and curiosity, but I hope you're not about to be sucked into the whole Bond series. Although I enjoyed some of the movies when I was a child, they are not really worth your time.

Glad you cut your teeth on this. It’s really the slowest of the Connery bond films. The second, From Russia With Love, is widely considered to be one of the best bond films, the plot and pacing are excellent….so much so they made a video game out of it for PlayStation 2 with Sean Connery doing the voice! For those Hammer Horror film fans like me, this starts the long tradition of Bond girls also being Hammer Horror girls. Both Ursula Andress (Honey Ryder) and Eunice Gayson (Sylvia, the woman in the casino playing against Bond) being famous also for their roles in Hammer films……Ursula as the lead in She and Eunice in Revenge of Frankenstein. This would continue through to the Roger Moore era as well. I would say if the slow pacing was concerning, don’t worry. It picks up with the next movie.

Glad you liked Dr. No! Next is From Russia With Love, and then the greatest Bond film ever....Goldfinger.

I love the old Bond movies. Every year in the 90s TBS (I think) would have a Bond month and replay them all. I always watched and freaking love them. The only "old" movies I every really watched. Dr No was so fun. Can't wait to watch more.

Ames, like you I also watched the Austin Powers movies first before I saw these and I can't not think of ''SHARKS WITH FRICKIN LASER BEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS'' when I see Dr. No's lair. Can't wait for your reaction to Russia with Love and Goldfinger! Hope you're having a nice weekend.

Glad you really loved it Ames. Connery really worked on his accent for this movie. After he got really famous he didn't have to bother. If you liked what Connery did in this film you can thank the director Terence Young. He taught Connery about the finer things in life, how to wear suits, how to walk and so on. Young also directed the next film. Jack Lord who played Felix Leiter is of course known for many from the original Hawaii Five-O. Book 'Em, Danno! Lois Maxwell is so great as Miss Moneypenny. Bond and Moneypenny have such a great flirtatious relationship right from the start. Bernard Lee is fantastic as M. He really believes in tough love. Tough exterior, but in the inside he really cares for his agents. Also the hat throwing to the hat stand starts right away. There was also the editor Peter Hunt who was the editor for the first three films and went on to direct On Her Majesty's Secret Service. You are going to meet Desmond Llewelyn, the one and only true Q, on the next film. Of course you know him form the Brosnan films. You also now got the first taste on the production designer Ken Adam. You're going to see many more fantastic sets in the following films. Bond originally had the 6.35 Beretta in the books, but the real life Geoffrey Boothroyd informed Fleming that Bond should have something with a bit more stopping power like the 7.65 Walther PPK. So Fleming changed the gun. Obviously now and event then the Watlher wasn't that powerful. It's small though so can easily be hid in a shoulder holster. The Brits stopped using Walther PPK's when one jammed during the kidnapping attempt of Princess Anne. The painting that Bond looked at Dr. No's hideout was a famous real life painting that got stolen. Bond really is the world's worst agent. In real life this would have been it for Bond. That's what they spoofed on the Austin Powers films with all the traps and so on. Next is From Russia with Love one of the best Bond movies. And you're going to get introduced to the great John Barry, whose music is a big part of Bond. Bll Conti also did great on For Your Eyes Only. Bonds always had great villains and Joseph Wiseman really set the bar high right from the start. Also SPECTRE is introduced right form the start. I have to say though that the Bond films and books are to different things. They are very different. One thing I'd like to mention in the start of this journey is the ladies man aspect. Of course Bond is a ladies man and always has time for a quick rendezvous, but sex is also a weapon in his arsenal. When we usually thnik about spies using sex for honey traps and such we usually think about female agents doing it. That is why this aspect is mostly overlooked. Like what Bond did with Miss Taro in this film. Bond would use his sex appeal for his advantage in later movies too. The car that Bond drove was a Sunbeam Alpine. There was also a high performance version the Sunbeam Tiger. Bond had a Bentley in the early books which you will see briefly in the next film. The most aged thing is obviously the rear projection car chase. Bond really is the king of one-liners. Most people tend to think Arnold, but Bond was first and there are many great ones in the franchise. I really love that in these old Bonds it would always in the end say that James Bond will return in.. (insert a title here) And yes that Halle Berry scene was a tribute to this movie.

As a kid, my parents only showed me Licence to Kill. It was only in the last couple of years that I started from the beginning and they’re so good! George Lazenby got dragged really bad for his one film, but honestly I think people just liked Connery so much, they were upset to see him go. I thought Lazenby was great. I look forward to watching these with you!

Roger Freeman

Bond was the coolest when I was a kid. Really enjoyed watching it with you. You always notice the set design and color better than I do.
