ROBOCOP (1987)

Dead or alive, you're coming with me! It's an absolute classic! And I love the deliberate over the top style. The commercials. 👌 The slow, well constructed reveal of Robocop is master class cinema. People often think it's a dumb action movie and you can enjoy it on that level, but it's so well made on all levels and underneath it, it has more interesting things to say on society. Can't wait to pop this on this evening! I'd buy that for a dollar!

Wade Wallenstein

There are 2 sequels to this and a 2014 remake. Robocop 2 is okay but they never really captured what Verhoven did in this one. There are also some animated and live action series but are an entirely different universe from this. It got so popular there was even toys and video games made. A favorite of mine is called RoboCop: Prime Directives. It's a TV Miniseries that was filmed in Toronto and continues the story of this film.

It feels like 80s action movie but in later years rewatching you can see a lot of undertones, some subtle some not so subtle like the 6000 SUX being a jab at the pontiac 6000 back in the day, the working stiff (literally) vs the corporate machine.

Kick ass reaction coming my way! 🤩🤖

Fun reaction! Two takeaways, I’ve seen it numerous times so no need for the standard comments. 1. Leeza Gibbons plays the female newscaster, she was big in the 80’s as the host of entertainment tonight, and definitely was crush worthy to my teen self. 2. This film always felt influenced by The Toxic Avenger, the classic Troma film that came out in 1984. Definitely the splatter. Just watching the TA trailer shows what I’m talking about.

Eric Lucas

This has always been one of my favorite movies. It was so much fun to watch it with a watch along. *hype*

James Rogers

The most impressive thing in this film for me me is Peter Weller's "physical" acting. His movements as Robocop are amazing; especially considering how cumbersome that outfit had to be. I wonder how audiences reacted to Murphy's death scene. Pretty intense for 1987. Phil Tippett, the man responsible for the stop motion work created a stop motion horror film called Mad God (2021) that is worth checking out.

This movie is such a classic. It was actually filmed in Dallas, Texas because Dallas had a more futuristic vibe and skyline than Detroit. The young Executive Bob Morton was played by Miguel Ferrer, he happens to be George Clooney's cousin. He did a lot of voice work later in life. He voiced the villain in Mulan (1998). Ferrer was in a lot of stuff but usually as a villain or a supporting character. He passed away in 2017 from cancer. From what I've heard he was a really nice guy. At 1:17:50 on the sync timer the secretary that Clarance is flirting with actually became Kurtwood Smith's wife in real life. The two actors met on that movie and they're still married today.

Another highly entertaining reaction, Ames! I'm glad that you watched AND enjoyed it. May I respectfully suggest that you ALSO watch one other film by Paul Verhoeven called Total Recall: it's got Arnold Schwarzenegger in it, and the usual Verhoeven combo of social commentary and gory violence, if you liked Robocop and Starship Troopers? It's a must watch. Also for general information: the "cobra assault cannons"? those were just barrett .50's with some fake fancy scopes mounted on them (I think originally they wanted to have some views THROUGH the scopes during the scene in the mill but the time and the budget simply didn't stretch far enough......) AND the big giant pistola that Robocop carried was, in fact, simply a full auto variant of the beretta 93 (pistol that the us army issued for years) but dressed up to be big and scary. They originally had put a desert eagle (in .50 action express) in Peter Weller's hand BUT decided that pistol, in spite of it's immense size (and weight) was TOO SMALL, so they went the extra mile..... one last thing: I don't know if you recognized her or not but Nancy Allen, the actress who played Carrie White's nemesis Chris Hargensen played officer Lewis....TMYK

Crashing into a vat of toxic waste, scaring the crap out of my coworkers with my melting body and then my body exploding when a van runs me over is the way I want to go out!

Super fun. Hadn't see since the 80s. Great to rewatch. Movie Palooza month continues to be a banger.

When practical effects are done exceptionally well there is a certain tangible realism they have that CGI doesn't match. I found that to be the case for the movie "The Thing" and for this film as well. I remember seeing Robocop at the mall with my cousin back in '87 when I was a teenager. It was quite a spectacle and one of those movies you immediately urged your friends to go see. Great action, characters, effects, and an intriguing story. Almost forty years later it holds up remarkably well, especially considering the accelerating relevance of AI in modern society. This film is also endearing to me because it was shot in my hometown of Dallas, Texas. The police station is the old Dallas High School in downtown Dallas. The building where the ex-public official holds the mayor hostage is the old City Hall and Jail where Lee Harvey Oswald was held and then shot by Jack Ruby. Great reaction Ames! Really enjoyed this!

RoboCop definitely holds up after all these years. And, the make-up effects look surprisingly good! Just another reason to try as much as possible in-camera instead of doing it in post. Also, as a Twin Peaks fan, I got to see a couple of familiar faces: Ray Wise and Miguel Ferrer. I hope you get a chance to check out the show at some point. Many shows owe a lot to what David Lynch and Mark Frost created.

The great Rob Bottin did the makeup effects. Remember him from "The Thing"! And the equally great Phil Tippett built and animated the ED 209. FYI: the recurring line, "I'd buy that for a dollar!" is a reference to an old science fiction story called "The Marching Morons". It was the basis for "Idiocracy". In it a salesman awakens from suspended animation to find that nearly everyone in the future is stupid, and his help is enlisted by the few remaining smart people to deal with the moron problem. The line in the story was: "I'd buy that for a quarter!". It was a reference to buying a gas station condom. The prices have, apparently, gone up.

Glad you loved it Ames. RoboCop is just fantastic. Peter Weller really gives an amazing performance. You really believe he is a robot. Whenever I think of Kurtwood Smith it's definitely Clarence Boddicker. Such a great villain. "Can you fly, Bobby?" So many great one-liners in this film. Ronny Cox is great as our favorite Dick. "I'm cashing you out, Bob." Practical effects and makeup is where it's at and especially wheb there are masters at work like here. Just adore the RoboCop theme. Doesn't it just make you want to uphold the law and protect the innocent? Paul Verhoeven 👍 At some point Ames you might want to check out Verhoeven's film Black Book (2006). It's a fantastic film and one that Verhoeven always wanted to make, but had to wait to get enough clout to make it happen.

Thanks Ames! Great reaction!!! I knew you’d like this one. This came out when I was like 10 and yes it was an absolute banger on vhs and way way way ahead of its time imo! They did make sequels and a remake but it wasn’t Paul Verhoeven and they just sucked bad sadly. You just have one more in the PV “trilogy”, Total Recall. I can’t wait for that one, it has all the same magic AND of course Arnold! I waited til tonight on purpose cause I’m off tommorow and want to tip a few while I watched this one. Thanks again keep up the great work!!
