The 'Burbs (1989)

Anyone ever seen somebody drive their garbage down to the street and then bang the hell out of it with a stick? LFG

Brian's Dog

Love all the actors, but Bruce Dern was my fave in this. Art is relatively in shape by today's standards.

A classic, glad you came across this one. Hanks' 80s run is my favorite of his, when his eccentric physical comedy shined! Always loved the stair drop. Tried to redo all the time growing up, always failed hahahaha

I first saw this like a lot of films in the 90s through HBO and have loved it ever since! It's where I got my love for "So bad it's good" lol Some trivia: During a 2018 interview with the DailyDead.com, Joe Dante admitted that it's remarkable how this film has become such a popular cult movie, because, at the time it was released, it was "just another movie" and received awful reviews. He said "It made a lot of money, it was fairly popular, but the reviews were abominably bad. And we sort of all figured, 'Well, we'll just go onto the next thing.' And then over the years, I'd go to dentists offices and stuff and they'd say, 'Oh, you made The 'Burbs?' And I discovered the picture was more popular than I thought it was. And now the movie is probably second only to Gremlins (1984) as the most popular movie I ever made."

I’m so glad you got to see this and I’m glad you liked it. I had a ball. I so thought this was gonna hit harder for you. But I do get that if you weren’t brought up with this movie, it may not hit as hard. It was an urban, legend story being played out before our eyes. They even tell an urban legend about the ice cream man. So the events and the characters are supposed to be over the top because that’s how an urban legend gets overtime with every retelling. The camera zooms in on the planet and zooms back out like poking a pin in a map and showing how there are stories like this all over. 🥸

I’ll always a soft spot for The ‘Burbs. Tom Hanks as a spaz is my favorite version of Tom Hanks. And Bruce Dern saying “About a 9 on the tension scale, Reuben” is one of the greatest lines in all of cinema 😆

I think I like this better every time I see it, and I saw it in the theater! Many lines were improvised, since there was a writer's strike going on. Bruce Dern peeling the wallpaper was improvised, as was the "about a 9 on the tension scale" line. You were correct! The one garbage man was the great Dick Miller, who was in almost all of Joe Dante's films, and many others. He's also the gun store owner killed by the Terminator. But fun aside, the direction and cinematography are great. That whole story about Skip is one long dollying take. The kind where if you make one mistake it's a long walk back to first position to do it again. And that quick in-out zoom on the "this is Walter" line, or the reaction shot of everyone, including the dog. It was all self-aware and all just for fun. Even Jerry Goldsmith's score makes fun of previous Jerry Goldsmith scores. And Dante's a great director who knows how to mix horror and humor. And so many actors! The older cop is Rance Howard, Ron Howard's dad. Henry Gibson was the head nazi in "The Blues Brothers". Brother Theodore was an individual who was beyond interesting. His family escaped the nazis with the help of a family friend: Albert Einstein. And so on. Oh, PS - all that paraphernalia connected to the furnace was absolutely real, and would have worked well to cremate bodies. It even would have made those sounds.

I loved this movie when I was younger. My sister and still quote lines from it to this day. Thank you, Ames for reacting to the 'Burbs.

Great reaction Ames! This was one of my favorites growing up and kind of the last great physical comedy he did before his obviously great but more serious roles. I hope you watch a couple of others from the 80s Bachelor Party and Dragnet. More classical comedies but still really funny. Thanks for doing the polls and interacting with you paetreons. It really makes you stand out and shine as a reactor! Have a good weekend. Out.

Think about it, this is where the term Pizza Dude comes from.
