Whoah, two shorter movies this week! You must have been psyched when you saw the runtimes! LOL! :) Shall begin shortly!

PS: NRA doesn't stand for the National Rifle Association when you see that in the beginning of old movies! It stands for National Recovery Administration. (FDR/New Deal program in the 30s re: Great Depression).

You said it all in your outro, Aames. The third act of this movie is just lunacy, such joyous farce, and actually a very pointed anti-war message, making absolute insanity out of war making. This is the pinnacle of the Marx Bros madness to me, no other movie of theirs compares to the excellence of this one. I put this movie on that very small shelf of one of the funniest movies ever made.

Harpo is mirroring Groucho, later Harpo is joined by Chico. Huge amounts of rehearsal to get the timing right.

James Rogers

I just love Groucho's machine gun line delivery. And the mirror scene has to be one of the most iconic moments in film history. Love it.

Kinokind

Margaret Dumont was Groucho's foil in most of their movies. She was reportedly exactly as she appears in the films - blissfully clueless about what was going on around her. And the three brothers, when not in their personas, looked nearly identical.

Jon Anderson

An old favourite! I don't think I've ever seen the Hurricane of Puns done better. They all looked very similar when out of costume, so there was a legend when they were on stage that if one of them was ill they'd just drop the straight man role and get Zeppo to impersonate whoever was out of action.

As far as I know, the Marx Bros introduced the English-speaking world to the wacky world of Jewish humor. (You can see the influence of Duck Soup on Woody Allen's "Bananas" and "Sleeper," for example.) Their timing was perfect because their jokes wouldn't have worked in silent films but were ideally suited to kick off the talkie era. I love revisiting this one every few years. Great reaction!

Silver Machine

Before they made movies, the Marx Brothers were vaudeville stars. And to breakup the monotony of their nightly shows, they would sometimes switch characters. (Zeppo would play Groucho, Groucho would play Chico, etc.) Usually the audience couldn’t tell the difference. That is where the mirror gag came from.

I don’t know the order on the AFI movies, but I can’t wait until we get to Singin in the rain!

Wally Hartshorn

Although Duck Soup is one of the most famous of their films, I consider "Animal Crackers" to be their best. Unfortunately, due to some legal disputes over the film rights, "Animal Crackers" isn't available to stream from any service. If it ever becomes available again, I hope you react to it, because I'm sure that you'll like it. For one thing, it features a scene where Chico plays piano and another where Harpo plays the harp.
