#26 on the AFI list! Another Frank Capra film! He never disappoints! He blended heart, with humour so effortlessly and the message of this film hold's up to this day.

Jimmy Stewart is incredible once again! He is simply amazing. His portrayal of a naive, young senator battling corruption delivers a powerful message about ones integrity, democracy, and the enduring spirit of the common man, bolstered by unforgettable imagery. The use of the camera, lights and shadow with the Capitol dome and the Lincoln monument made the moments of this film so incredible. I loved the filibuster sequence, how can that not inspire you?

Loved it!

Let me hear your thoughts below!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

Jimmy Stewart was so determined to make his the exhaustion of his voice believable that he deliberately took a substance called mercury dichloride to irritate his vocal chords after he asked a doctor for something that would give him a sore throat! Mr. Smith goes to Washington has been one of my all-time favorite films since I was a kid. I'd also say that among the top five movies that have had the most profound effect on me, three of them starred Jimmy Stewart (Vertigo, It's a Wonderful Life, and this one). I think his body of work is the most iconic of any actor in Hollywood history. The moxie and good-heartedness of Saunders is also brilliantly portrayed by Jean Arthur. Another film of hers I would recommend is The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), which is more of a comedy. As someone who loves American history and enjoyed visiting the historic sites in Washington, D.C. about 20 years ago (including a trip to Mr. Vernon!) it was really nice to see this film again. Great reaction Ames, and I'm glad you loved this film!

I love watching this with you sis. I've seen it before and OMG were my emotions raw that first time, but even now I still feel it and teared up. Oh the greatest line in the movie, when Clarissa reached out to him at his lowest and she inspired him and he said "Do you know where we can get a drink". Because when he asked the that you just knew it was on :) ................... Oh a little trivia about Jimmy Stewart, he enlisted in the Army during WWII, was commissioned and became a pilot and a war hero and he retired from the military as a two star General. Watching this now though is very relatable and I don't want to get to political her, only to say that there are Taylor's in charge in America right now, but that's all I'll say about that. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you for watching this, I could feel it from you. The most powerful person in the movie, Clarissa. Women could not serve in the Senate back then, but she ended up being the most powerful person in that Senate.

Lana’s assessment was spot on! Did you notice much of the cast here was in IAWL? Capra never fails to delight. This was Stewart’s last film before he enlisted in the Air Force and the first one he did when he returned was ITS A WONDERFUL LIFENo denying that both Capra and Stewart are national treasures….

Agree that Jimmy Stewart is truly impressive. I have never been to D.C. High on my list of cities to visit in North America. Want to see the Lincoln Memorial. I think cool how the movie depicts workings of the Senate. The movie Lincoln (2012) has a focus on the other half of Congress – the House of Representatives.

So much worth coming back to this Patreon for this Christmas season, and to see this reaction and the reaction to one of my most favorite movies, The Best Years of Our Lives. This movie never fails to inspire me. It always reminds me again of the corruption of politics but gives me hope again that honest people might rise up and make it all right. I've always believed that James Stewart might have been rewarded his Best Actor Oscar for The Philadelphia Story, but he earned it in this role, and the award for TPS was a make up for this movie. Clark Gable for Gone With the Wind and James Stewart for this role must have split the vote up enough in 1939 to enable the dark horse winner of that years race to prevail. RFK fan is correct that this movie shares actors with It's A Wonderful Life. Beulah Bondi plays his mother in both films! I think Aames spotted Porter Hall in the movie. Maybe. He was one of the Senators, and was the noxious store "psychologist" Mr. Sawyer in Miracle on 34th St and was the train witness in Double Indemnity and one of the courthouse reporters in His Girl Friday!

This was my first time watching this. Super idealistic, but Jimmy Stewart really pulls you in, and carries you through the movie. This movie feels like it could be written today, and not a thing has changed.

Trivia: In 1942, when a ban on American films was imposed in German-occupied France, theaters chose Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) for their last movie before the ban went into effect. One Paris theater reportedly screen the film nonstop for 30 days prior to the ban.

What always strikes me, Ames, when I watch these old movies about poisonous politics is how almost *nothing* has really changed -- in almost a whole century since this one was made! Is our system any better now? Is it cleaner now? Are we free today from graft and greed and corruption? I can suggest two other great films from around that same time which make similar points: All the King's Men (1949), and The Great McGinty (1940). Check them out and you'll see that “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” I wish it wasn't true, but it is.

It was great to see this one again with you Ames! What a beautiful Washington DC montage towards the beginning of the film! It made me tear up a little. Those ideals are as powerful as ever, but obviously have been difficult for the country to live up to. What great performances by Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur in particular! It was fun to see so many actors in the film from It's a Wonderful Life! Besides Jimmy Stewart, the most notable of which includes Thomas Mitchell, who in MSGTW plays "Diz" Moore, the cynical but sympathetic reporter and who in IAWL plays Uncle Billy; Beulah Bondi who in MSGTW plays Jefferson Smith’s mother and who in IAWL plays Ma Bailey, George Bailey’s mother; H.B. Warner, who in MSGTW plays Senate Majority Leader Senator Agnew and who in IAWL plays Mr. Gower, the local pharmacist; and Charles Lane, who in MSGTW plays "Nosey" the reporter, and who in IAWL plays Reineman, Mr. Potter's rent collector who said, "You can’t laugh off this Bailey Park anymore... Look at it today. Dozens of the prettiest little homes you ever saw. 90% owned by suckers who used to pay rent to you." Such a great cast in both films!

I absolutely love this movie and Jimmy Stewart. FYI in real life he was a WWII combat pilot and a war hero who eventually became a General. He obtained the highest rank of any actor who served the country in war.
