I accidentally on purpose skipped over the movies: The Grapes of Wrath and Some Like it Hot... so we'll be swinging back to those!

#18 on the AFI list, The General (1927) was a hoot! Holy crap, hold on to your caps! I had a lot of fun watching my first Buster Keaton film (not counting his cameo in Sunset Blvd). I can't wait to hear all about this film! The sets, action sequences and the stunts/explosions were wild!! Pretty epic! I loved seeing Buster's work! He is really talented, precise and a friggen athlete!

Let me know all your thoughts below! Can't wait to hear em'!

Oh yeah! Ha!!!! Let's go! What a week! Now we're talking STUNTS! Anyone who has never seen The General before: you're in for a big treat! This movie is another one: just what the doctor ordered this week. One hundred years old and as mind blowing to watch as ever! Super psyched to see your face during this one, once the action starts! Charlie who? :P

The last movie Buster Keaton ever did was an absolute masterpiece. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

To answer your question, yes! People are very much on one side or another on the whole Charlie vs. Buster. And as much as I love a great Chaplin flick, at the end of the day.....I'm a Buster man! :D That reaction was a total blast!! PS: I've heard this described as the most authentic Civil War movie ever made! The stuff with all the extras: amazing. As you say: epic scale. And for a comedy!!!

There are lots of **terrible** versions of this film out there, but fortunately the exact version that Ames watched (with Carl Davis' magnificent score) is available for free on YT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R96DRQ_318 (YT channel: "Flogod Cinema") (Make sure to increase video quality to 1080p and to turn off Ambient Mode if watching full-screen. Also, there's 10 seconds of black screen at the start.) This is a phenomenal film. Buster Keaton, one of the all-time legends of cinema!

I am so happy you watched this. I first saw it in a college class on the Silent Clowns of Comedy. We had already watched two Chaplin films ("Gold Rush" and "Modern Times") when the professor rolled out "The General." It left the entire class in awe. Later, we watched "Steamboat Bill, Jr." and "Go West." When it comes to feature films, Keaton gets the edge. But it's so close. Does anyone remember the short "The Goat"? Hysterical!

There were three geniuses of silent stunt-filled comedy: Keaton, Chaplin and Lloyd. I personally prefer Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, because they were different everyman characters, where Chaplin's Little Tramp was a more stylized recurring character. Chaplin was also a lot more sentimental (not that this was a bad thing), whereas the other two were almost 100% comedic. All three were geniuses. Even Chaplin's talkie, "Limelight" is a masterpiece (but a tear-jerker). But I'd go with "Steamboat Bill, Jr.", or "Speedy" or "Safety Last," before Chaplin. They're just more fun. And Keaton and Lloyd had much more spectacular stunts, which were 90% of the time, real. No stuntmen in those days. If you need to dump a locomotive off a trestle into the river, then do it! PS - Years ago, I had dinner with an old friend of Harold Lloyd's. What do you say? What do you ask!? I found out that Lloyd was a good business man and made it through the depression and beyond with his wealth intact. In the film "Westworld", outdoor locations for Roman World were filmed in the backyard of Harold Lloyd's mansion.

This film is dynamite! A riveting action film with laugh out loud moments featuring an incredibly talented performer in Buster Keaton. The cinematography and editing is remarkable. It's amazing that this movie came out nearly 100 years ago and was likely seen in the theater by elderly veterans of the War between the States!

Ames, I'm glad you're getting a chance to discover the magical genius of Buster Keaton. He is the ultimate master of blending comedy, action, and even drama. Plus his stunts are at a level no one else has ever surpassed. Check out this short doc narrated by his great-granddaughter, Keaton Talmadge -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72FQIV-jpEk
