Great post-analysis. I would agree this was very forward thinking because on watching this in the ‘90s, I didn’t really connect it to this “virtual reality” issue… video games were relatively benign and “Second Life” was not yet a thing, but these issues are looming now and present serious concerns. Thanks!!🙏🏻

If the holodeck was given to people today the FIRST thing they would be doing is banging their coworkers. I mean, within minutes of getting the device, no kidding. …. Or.. am I just being a pig?

Dwight Schultz, the actor who Barkley is one of those actors who you never really see as a lead, always a supporting actor but he knocks it out of the park every time. I grew up in the 80's so the first time I saw him was in The A-Team TV series. Couldn't have played a more different character than Barkley but he made the show

I really like this episode, particularly for Dwight Schultz's performance. But it's also kind of fun that in Barclay, the writers inserted what feels like a present-day socially awkward man into this futuristic utopian universe. Regarding Barclay's usage of the holodeck: I think it's fair to say that in reality, this is what the holodeck would be used for much of the time. I mean, the show has vaguely acknowledged this in past episodes (Season 1 with Riker and the binaries, and Season 3 with Geordi and Leah Brahms). But here the writers basically dedicated an entire episode to it.

I had empathy for Barclay but not a huge fan. Glad he had a good arc. And the actor was good. Having the short Riker was funny. Also funny how Deanna was accepting until she saw her duplicate. Interesting thinking about what virtual reality will be like for us irl in future.

Dwight Schultz of course played Howling Mad Murdock in the, at the time, very popular The A-team. So different from this. You should check out a YouTube clip with him, completely different. I love when even in this character when he is on the holodeck he is quite self assured, but immediately goes to shy Barclay when around people. Picard calling him Broccoli is absolutely gold!
