Awesome movie. Love the music and how it a quasi-period piece. Liked "themes/ideas." Like the musical scene with different time periods mixed in. I like the scene (a climax scene) of the Klan being ambushed. Michael B. Jordan = great. Asian couple did well = believable. Love Hailee Steinfeld = beautiful. Liked Annie and Pearline. Jack O'Connell (Remmick) did well = good actor. The movie did seem a little long.

I love this movie. It's so raw and sexy and fun. Hailee Steinfeld has two all time best lines. Annie and Delta Slim two of my favorite supporting characters. Incredible cinematography. The final scene in the credits messes me up bad....last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. I think it gets 9 Oscar nominations and 5 wins: Picture Actor Director Original Screenplay (Win) Score (Win) Song Cinematography (Win) Costumes (Win) Casting (Win)

I could tell from the write up that your first watch had you respecting the film but not necessarily loving it, but I didn’t sense that during the reaction so I’m super grateful you picked this. Sinners was my favorite movie last year, and definitely top five this decade. I worked in a music store for a very long time when I was younger, and am a huge blues fan. The indomitable blues legend Buddy Guy plays Sammie in the last scene and my jaw dropped when I saw him. I’ve seen him live before and he’s amazing. But the scene with the music era’s and different artists creating a glorious choir literally had me holding my breath in the theater. Bootsy Collins and his funk style, scratching dj’s, breakdancers…..it’s cinematic perfection. The roof IS on fire. Coogler also was careful to not have the vampires be necessarily the bad guys in the film. The KKK was. The lead vampire talking about their troubles being the same wasn’t lying. And the vampires all became one regardless of color. I could write more lol but I’ve been long winded enough. I hope one day Coogler does a prequel, a non horror gangster film with the brothers in Chicago. I’d watch the hell out of that.

For me? The music was the real star of this film and Coogler did a stellar job in the edit on those scenes. Also? My choice for MVP goes to the always entertaining Jack O'Connell who steals every scene he's in..

Michael B. Jordan was 14-15 when filmed in 1st season of “The Wire” in 2002. His first role in a major production. His character’s age was 16. Jordan said he fell in love with acting while working on THE WIRE. He said: “It was the first time I ever really, like, got lost in a character.” The Wire was a favorite of President Obama. CBS interview = Interviewer: "Settle an office debate. Best 'Wire' character of all time?" Pres Obama: "It's got to be ****, right? I mean, that guy is unbelievable, right?" Pres Obama: "And that was one of the best shows of all time."

This was really interesting. I knew about the sequence showing the influence of the blues on various eras of pop music (funk guitar, hip hop), and that scene really delivered and was my favorite part. I also really liked the switching up of aspect ratios, going from widescreen to full-frame and back. Very ingenious, I don't know if it's been done before. My main feeling after watching this is that a large percentage of the lines of dialogue feel like they're "buttons" intended to give a big impact or heavy emotional weight. So it didn't feel to me like the screenplay was building a lot of momentum. But I'd like to check out more of Coogler's work; in interviews he seems like a real "old head" who respects past masters like Ozu, Kurosawa, Hitchcock, and black pioneers like Charles Burnett (whose films I still need to explore). I'm glad you went rogue this week with a couple of picks of your own! No need to apologize, it helps to keep things fresh and exciting for you and the members. I enjoy taking the pulse of modern films now and then.

I guess the moral of the story is assimilation sucks. This is the reason I love the horror genre. The perfect format for interweaving social/political/existential commentary and entertainment. Great film.
