Star Trek: TNG S4xE8 "Future Imperfect"

Janeway knows

Some read oddity into the fake Romulann saying Riker fely so emotional for Minuet still, I see it as that was the first time we learned about Riker and the Trombone and he had been playing it earlier meaning memories of playing it would be up front including Minuet. So it was more about his aging and the Trombone and how the kid mistook Minuet for real.

Ah, this episode is great. I'm pretty sure the first time I saw it I still didn't quite understand the Minuet reference. (In my defense, for the first few seasons, I watched the episodes kind of out of order through syndication.) "Minuet" was a pretty deep cut for the writers to go for in an age when episodes were largely meant to be standalone. Also, the part where Riker tells Picard to shut up is legendary. Even though it's not the real Picard, its still hilarious.

This is one of my favorite episodes, especially with the "Alternate Reality" aspect. The "Future" combadge design is great.

I never get tired of that clip of Riker telling Picard to "Shut Up!" It was nice to see Carolyn McCormick reprise her role as Minuet almost 3 years after "11001001" (TNG S1E15). Riker certainly hasn't forgotten her! I'm surprised he didn't make a deal with the Bynars afterwards. Riker: "Captain Picard and I saved your planet, Bynaus. Now... about that special holodeck program." 😂

Good episode. Great reaction.

I really like this one, even if it does lose something during rewatches once you know what all the twists and turns are going to be. And I only say that because it's one of those that relies very heavily on the shock value of said twists and turns. It's still a great Riker episode, like you said A, and I'm glad you pointed out the interaction between Riker and Troi during the opening teaser. They're so adorable and have such great chemistry together😍 Plus, of course, getting to see a future version of the Enterprise/Federation with all the changes is very cool, even if it all just turns out to be trick in the end. Good stuff, A, see you in the next one👍🖖

The way TNG works you know somethings up and we're not going to continue with this new reality, but they did get you with the second one haha. TNGcepction! Very fun episode! Seeing Geordi without his visor is so strange, but must have been liberating for LeVar to act without them for a change.

That is in fact, Jonathan Frakes playing the trombone. They did have someone else play it when the music was too difficult, but Jonathan Frakes does play Trombone. I can tell the difference between when it’s him vs. someone else because I play the trombone and I can tell that he’s not in the correct positions with the slide when someone else is playing it

It’s fun to think that TNG had 178 episodes over 7 seasons. Whereas more recent big ticket shows have far less. For instance, Game of Thrones had 72 over 8 seasons. Breaking Bad, 62 episodes over 5 seasons. I liked those shows….a lot. But older series like TNG were able to develop characters who we fell in love with. They had the time to basically invite use to KNOW them. I really enjoy the character development episodes. When Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad ended it was about wrapping up plot points and coming to terms with how to satisfy the audience. But when TNG ended, it was sad. It was saying goodbye. This series is amazing, and survives like memories of old friends do. I’m getting sentimental because I just rewatched Picard.

When "Min" was revealed to be Minuet, I got serious chills, the first time I saw this episode. I can't remember whether I recognized Carolyn McCormick in the seconds before Frakes actually said "Minuet". Probably not, as she didn't begin playing Dr. Olivet on "Law & Order" until the following year, and I think that's the only other thing I would have seen her in, so it would probably have been unlikely that I'd know her face easily (although I'm sure I must have watched a rerun of "11001001" during the lag between Seasons 1 & 2). I sort of think of Minuet's appearance here as a bit of fan service -- I think fans (at least some fans) were disappointed that Minuet hadn't reappeared as a character and that Riker didn't get to have a real relationship with her (although, let's face it, Riker was never at a loss for companionship...). I think that maybe the writers were giving the fans a little wink.
