Great choice Toc!! Worth it alone for Jerry Lewis' deadpan performance essentially playing himself. I always thought he would have been great if he was cast as an evil villain because from what I've read about him? That wasn't far off from his real persona...

Congrats Toc.

I honestly cannot put any film above ‘Goodfellas’ as Scorsese’s ultimate masterpiece. But ‘King of Comedy’ comes really close, and it may actually be his most revealing, relevant film to the world we now live in. These days, it’s not Jimmy the Gent or Travis Bickle who are more likely to endanger our society. It’s Rupert Pupkin.

I’ve felt that Scorsese & writer Paul Zimmerman were ahead of their time with this one, in dialing in this obsession some will have for the pursuit of fame. It was, in essence, a prophetic indication of what was to come in pop culture. Starting in the 90’s with ‘Reality’ Television, seeing how far people would go to get their 15 minutes of fame. Onto the 2000’s, where ratings went through the roof for shows like The Simple Life & Keeping Up With the Kardashians, as people get so fixated on this fame monster. And, onto modern times, where everyone who is anyone is looking to be the next one to go viral with whatever Tic-Toc or You-Tube video. While I agree with Ames’s outro that the closing line of ‘I’d rather be king for a day, than a schmuck for a lifetime…’ feels gross in concept, that’s exactly what if feels like to me watching this next crop of online scavengers doing anything it takes to become the next viral ‘thing’, no matter how much of their soul they have to sell in the process.
