Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

A fun, unique sciencey problem for us to solve AND we get to put my girl front and centre in a character based story that gives her a chance to really act?! Yes please! But I'm biased, what can I say lol. I love Deanna and I love Deanna episodes.

Judging by the remarks, Ames, you may not be particularly an avid fan of Marina Sirtis (who plays Deanna). But if anyone is interested in a Sirtis performance that casts the actor in an entirely different light, check out the episode of the Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, entitled "The Six Napoleons". Sirtis plays an oh-so passionate Italian woman living in London, and her dialog is in oh-so top-of-the-lungs Italian (subtitled). The whole episode is ramped up melodrama a la Italian verismo opera, which I find delightful. You can watch the series in the USA (and maybe Canada?) via the Britbox streaming service, part of the Roku Channel. (IMO, Brett is the finest portrayer of Holmes in history, and the series, produced by Granada TV, the most authentic retelling of the original Conan Doyle stories. Worth watching the whole series, I would say. I have a tradition of watching the episode "The Blue Carbuncle" every Christmas, as faithfully as some watch "A Christmas Carol" or "It's a Wonderful Life", etc.., etc.)

I liked the fact that the writers kinda called themselves out for using Deanna as a glorified lie detector most of the time. Showing her actually during her job is cool. The fact that she is on the bridge still baffles me. But I get it, otherwise she would hardly ever appear in episodes. The idea of Troi losing her ability was interesting, the execution was poor. The writing was uninspired and the acting was without nuance. And yes, the dynamic between Deanna and Riker is weird at times. I think Frakes just went for it every chance he got haha.

I haven't watched the reaction yet (but I'm trying to glean Ames's response from the comments). But I will say that I really like the idea of this episode and centering it entirely on a character's emotional arc. And in other episodes, I think the writing for Deanna, and Marina Sirtis's acting, is spot on. But in this one, I wasn't sure what to make of the decision to make Troi crash out quite this much. Part of me likes it, because it's showing a vulnerability that the characters rarely ever display, so it's refreshing in that way. But another part of me thinks it's slightly out of character for a Deanna to apparently say "Screw it, I'm just going to burn all the bridges." (As I type this, I just remembered another episode later on that vaguely compares with this premise. While the person's behavior in that episode felt consistent with their character, I guess I just expected Troi specifically to handle the situation differently.)
