Hi!

Apologies for the late upload today. It will be a Monday watch-along for most of you, or whenever you get to it. I had an insanely crazy weekend with some work deadlines, got to this late, and then my computer felt like it was crashing the render every single time! WEE! Anywho, I think I have solved that issue! Happens ever so often, tech, I guess!

WELL!

The Right Stuff has all THE RIGHT STUFF! I may have missed some nuances or dialogue, and maybe said some science words wrong, BUT I loved this movie so, so, soooo much! Thanks for getting this one to win on the poll! This movie has so many amazing things about why we love movies! Add in space stuff, and it makes it a near-perfect movie for me!

Thanks for your patience with this one! Let me know all your thoughts down below!!

yes ready to watch your reaction to The Right Stuff, came home earlier to watch it, and did not see it upload, so now it is 10PM Sunday night, but I am ready to go. Love this movie.

No worries, I knew it was a long movie and was going to be a bitch to render. But I also knew it was going to be well-worth the wait!!!! Psyched!

All started with breaking the speed of sound, I have a signed photo by Chuck Yeager. Yeager was in the movie, as Fred the Bartender

Although I love this movie, it does contain some distorted facts, for example John Glens historic mission in the movie states that his mission was cut short because of a heat shield issue, in reality It was not a heat shield issue but a sensor issue and it was not cut short, he completed his 3 orbit mission. The movie really just makes a jump to him in the parade. The Apollo Astronauts that I had asked about this movie, had a lot of issues with it and many did not like it, because they thought it took too many liberties in the some of the facts. For example: The movie, seems to blame Gus Grissom of panicking, and that he blew the hatch prematurely, but investigations cleared Gus and they concluded that explosive bolts mechanically malfunctioned. which was not told in the movie. They did not like how it treated Gus. One told me that John's wife did not call him, but he would call her, which I felt was not a big issue. This movie gives in my option a good idea of what Chuck Yeager and The Mercury 7 meant for the space program. Never forget the men of Mercury 7: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton.

I sure hope you now continue with "From the Earth to the Moon " a 1998 twelve-part television miniseries. This series the Apollo Astronauts I talked to about it, approved. You will love it

One of my FAVES and I think in the top 10 films of the 80's. One of the best directors back then was Phil Kaufman (check out THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING).. Sadly, this film wasn't a success at the Box office but SO well done!! FYI.. Look for the REAL Chuck Yeager who makes a cameo as the old man at the bar lurking around...

(Time for me to sound like a broken record and repeat myself!) If you want to learn more about the Apollo program, you owe it to yourself to watch the HBO miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon". It's a wonderful 12-episode docudrama hosted (and co-produced) by Tom Hanks, with an excellent cast, gripping stories, great writing, and A+ production quality. Plus, when you are done, you will know more about spaceflight than 99% of the population! Nearly every time someone reacts to "Apollo 13" or "The Right Stuff", they say how interesting space is. I believe they are sincere, yet I've never been able to convince anyone to react to "From the Earth to the Moon". Please be the first!

The film did win 4 Oscars, but not Best Picture, which went to Terms of Endearment. It doesn't take away from the film though, which I like also (I'm a history nerd at heart). Here is a list of the Oscar nominations and wins for The Right Stuff: 8 NOMINATIONS, 4 WINS - (noted by *) * Film Editing - Glenn Farr, Lisa Fruchtman, Stephen A. Rotter, Douglas Stewart, Tom Rolf * Music (Original Score) - Bill Conti * Sound - Mark Berger, Tom Scott, Randy Thom, David MacMillan * Sound Effects Editing - Jay Boekelheide Actor in a Supporting Role - Sam Shepard Art Direction - Art Direction: Geoffrey Kirkland, Richard J. Lawrence, W. Stewart Campbell, Peter Romero; Set Decoration: Pat Pending, George R. Nelson Cinematography - Caleb Deschanel Best Picture - Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, Producers

What an epic movie this is! I've been fascinated with the space program since I was a kid, and have wanted to pilot an aircraft for as long (I'm still hanging on to that dream of going to flight school). The Right Stuff does a masterful job of relating the wonder and exhilaration of endeavoring farther and faster through air and space. The actors in this film really did embody the roles they played, and the visual effects were stunningly beautiful and realistic. The score is very moving and the editing is brilliant. I especially love the cut from the capsule fireball to the tickertape parade. One particularly endearing scene is of the fan dancer moving to Debussy's Claire De Lune along with the expressions of the astronauts and their wives having a remarkable shared experience. To alternate that with Chuck Yeager's determined ascent into the upper atmosphere is awesome. Yeager it should be mentioned become a Brigadier General and Commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School that trained astronauts. He lived to be 97 years old and a few years ago had a twitter account. He liked a reply I posted to a comment he made and I was ecstatic about it! Enjoyed your reaction Ames! I've been hoping you'd watch this one for awhile!

When I was a child in the 60's I remember it wasn't uncommon to hear a sonic boom from overhead. They would rattle the windows and knock some dishes off the shelf. They were banned in 1973. John Glenn was elected senator from Ohio; he served in the Senate for 25 years. He also got to go back to space in 1998 on the Space Shuttle Discovery when he was 77 years old. You may want to also check out the movie Hidden Figures which is a different side to these events.

This stuff is remarkable. Great cast. I always liked John Glenn. I remember him well as a Senator. I liked "First Man" (2018) (drama/history) w/Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong and Claire Foy as his wife (Janet Armstrong). I remember in 1986 less than 3 years after The Right Stuff released watching Challenger in real time take off (we were in the lunchroom at work watching on a TV on one of those movable cart stands w/wheels) -- and being shocked, devastated, confused when Challenger exploded as ascending.

At the barbecue Allen Shepard tells his wife that he is going to the moon.. Yes, it happened.. he walked on the moon as Commander of Apollo 14.

I nearly spit out my teeth when you said, "He wants to meet his macher". Great pun. On top of the other deserving superlatives you bestowed on the film I think it should be said that Bill Conti was the perfect choice to score the film. If you're interested I recommend reading Yeager. A really good bio covering Chuck's life.
