I'm glad you enjoyed this. I generally like it as well. I think when this episode first aired, people liked it well enough. But in recent times, at least in the reactor circles, this episode has become semi-infamous for doing Geordi dirty (by making him so awkward). One thing I like about it is that (like you say in the wrap-up) that it's such a call-back to a previous episode. And in as much as it's painful to watch Geordi fumble around so much, I also like that this episode at least seems to want to deal with the ethical ramifications of the other Brahms episode.

The special effects are for the most part very similar to the original. They used footage from old film as much as possible when they converted the show to high definition, actually re-scanning every frame of film and effects and then re-composited them (very long process). However, for some of the effects, if they were done digitally back in the 90's couldn't be converted to hi-def. I think this is one of those that they had to redo from scratch (don't quote me on that) for the blu-ray. But, they tried to make those few effects they had to redo look identical to the original, and they did get very close. In the original Star Trek series from the 60's, a lot of those special effects were completely changed, but on TNG, they stayed pretty true to the original effects.

I did think it a little creepy in S3E6 when Geordi kissed a holographic simulation of Dr. Leah Brahms. Glad the arc between Geordi and the real Dr. Leah Brahms concluded well this episode. I am pumped you may go to 2 episodes of TNG per week if the demands in your personal life will allow.
