This episode broke me.

Thanks for being her guys! Truly amazing storytelling and film making. No wonder it’s regarded as the best series ever made.

And also in the runner up category, is when "Skip" Muck introduces Webb, and reminds all of us, of all the characters and their wounds, before some shuffle off this mortal coil.

I've heard Richard Speight Jr speak about playing Muck, and speaking to one of the survivors (don't want to spoil w/ the name) about him, and asking questions, and the survivor had to leave the room bc he was still so torn up about it. Richard said it opened up his eyes that this wasn't just a role, and that he went when the other was ready and apologized for his approach and listened again. Richard said it was the most meaningful and satisfying role he has ever had the privilege of playing. Also Ames, great reactions to this series. I remember watching it when it first aired and this episode had me utterly wrecked. It was shot so well, from the PoV shots, to the shelling, to Buck and the emotional toll, to Spiers and Lip at the end and the church with the losses fading, just beautiful. Finally reading about what Spiers did at Foy, just wow.

You're right on. Richard talked to the Muck Family, and was able to get the Niagra swim stuck into the show (not in the original book).
