The Pacific Part 2 Watch Along

Awe....thanks so much for what you did to make it easier to follow along. Hope it isn't to much trouble on your end. So reference this episode the army, which had more money allocated to it, had the better and newer equipment. Hence the comment that the Marines were fighting with rifles that their grandfathers had. This especially plays apart in how John Basilone burnt his forearm. They briefly referenced and focused on a mit that the machine gunners carried with them....as the barrels were water cooled and would get extremely hot when firing. In the last attack the mit was missing and that is when he picked it up and balanced it on his forearm. As the war went on, the Marines got better and newer equipment. Reference the attacks during the night. The Japanese, throughout the war used nighttime to launch their attacks.

There is a bit of a spoiler on the intro, you can see Eugene in a helmet giving away he would end up joining at some point but since it's episode 2 when he does it's not too bad.

As John Thomas mentioned above the Marines had older weapons because they don't get the funding the US army does. The marines were using bolt action rifles, and comically bulky machine guns. The rifles the US army used were the newer M1 Garand's, the same ones that they use in Band of Brothers. That's the gun the marines are marveling at in the crate when they were stealing from the army. My Grandfather served in the US army in the Pacific in New Guinea. I never meet him, he died like 2 decades before I was born, but from what my mom told me he wasn't a fan of the Marines. Now watching this show it all makes sense, the army and marines had an intense rivalry.

Unblurring the chalk intro helped a lot Ames. Thanks. I'm still marveling at the sheer intensity of the battles in this episode! This one hit hard. I can't begin to imagine the emotional toll of facing a seemingly endless number of enemy soldiers running towards your entrenched position at night, knowing you're massively out-manned, out-gunned, and running low on ammunition. Truly terrifying. I guess all you can do is fight like hell, pray, and hold on.

Check out The Punisher series, starring Jon Bernthal…Spectacular!

"Old Bill and Guadalcanal." Ames, this one is for you. Dale's father never talked about his WWII experiences on Guadalcanal, but fortunately recorded them for that Library of Congress series, before he passed. Fetzer shared the video with us once, totally astounded by what his father had never told him. His father, at 18, in California, enlisted in the Marines. They found out he worked on his father's ranch. "Are you good with animals?" "I guess." "Okay, you're going to be a dog handler!" "No, no, I want to be a Scout or a machine-gunner." "Well, you'll BE a Scout, with a dog!" He was mad; this wasn't what he signed up for. So, he was sent to Dog School and was assigned his team mate, "Old Bill," a German Shepherd. I later read people donated their dogs for the war effort; "If you don't need him, PLEASE send him back," kids would write. But the decision was made, if a dog didn't make the grade, it was cheaper just to put him down. And what did the Dog think? "I must have been Bad. I'm Sorree. Let me go Home!" "Old Bill" and Fetzer, Sr., went through training and passed with flying colors. A lot of dogs didn't pass. But Fetzer hated it, and Old Bill hated it, too. AND they Hated each other. He knew the dog hated him, because Old Bill bit him, once. They were sent to Guadalcanal and used extensively, for scouting out the enemy. And Fetzer hated that dog, Old Bill, every hour and every day, until the day Old Bill took a bullet for Fetzer, meant for him. He would never forget "Old Bill."
