Always made me wonder which would be worse. Freezing to death in a foxhole in Bastogne? Or dying from being constantly wet in the heat, humidity and mosquitos of the pacific. I'm still torn as to which is worse....

Florin Ispas

the worse was in pacific..We will see in 5- to 10 the brutality, de nightmares, the heavy burden on the Eugene..Someone said years ago between Leckey, Basilone and Eugene the last one will endure inimaginable pain. His young soul will be torn apart, ript apart, trown away..War on Paciifc was beyond hell.I read a lot to know the fact , the true fact japanese troops had no remorse, no stop.German troops had respect for the americans but japanese nooh...They brutally kill chinese, americans and aussies..

I'm assuming you're well past this episode in your watches and if you could sum it up simply it would be it gets worse before it gets worse. At this point they are two years in nearly 2 years left to go. In europe allies have barely invaded Italy which is stalling out, Normandy (BoB) is still 6 months away. They had a long experience, just barely reached the midway point of the island hopping to destroy the Japanese empire.

"No wonder you guys don't talk about Guadalcanal, you didn't do anything. Apparently, John Basilone did everything.... Haha. Now he's back home selling bonds and dicking blonds." "They murdered sleep." Is that based on Shakespeare's "Macbeth hath murdered sleep”? They killed peace. No rest. Insomnia. "For the record, Doc, I was a freshman in high school when my mom stopped breastfeeding me. Do you see that as a problem?"

The Japanese military culture was built on Bushido, the moral code of Samurai in which honor was above all. You seem interested in learning more about the Japanese viewpoint of World War 2 so I suggest after this series you react to the movie Letters from Iwo Jima directed by Clint Eastwood. It follows the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. There is a companion piece Flags of Our Fathers which follows the same battle from the American side.

It's so depressing that Gibson's final word to Leckie is not that he stay safe, but rather that he have a quick, painless death. It's just one more indication that many (most?) of the soldiers never expected to make it home alive.

James Badge Dale, aka Leckie, is a fine and underused actor. My favorite of his is a series called Rubicon. He plays Will Travers, an analyst at a New York City-based federal intelligence agency who is thrown into a story where nothing is as it appears to be. A veritable Matryoshka doll….circles within circles.

Your thoughts on acting and psychology were interesting to me. As a younger person, I had an acting major in college and always looked at it as free therapy, which is odd, I guess, as I hated reading Stanislavski.

I bet that when the director and producers of a new war series or movie come together with the score composer, the composer will always say they will lead the soundtrack with French horns. I bet Masters of the Air’s music will have plenty of french horn parts written into the score. The default for war movies.

Andy Bodkin

If you haven't heard. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg just released a new series called Masters Of The Air. Its made in the same spirt/story telling style of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. The 1st 2 episodes came out today and it is incredibly good. I would love to watch it again with you if you decide to react to it. 5 stars, would recommend.
