As horrible as the fighting was in these islands we were not facing the best or the bulk of the Japanese Army. Often overlooked by Americans is that the Chinese lost around 20 million people fighting Japan. More credit should be given to the allies who fought with us in the Pacific Theater but are rarely if ever mentioned.

You mentioned the footage at the beginning intro and it reminded me of a documentary on Netflix called five came back I believe. WwII was the first time people at home could see live scenes from the war thanks to cinematographers like William Wyler that made the Memphis Belle documentary or Ford to captured footage of the battle of midway that George Lucas later used to style is space scenes from star wars after. They would go along the battles like Normandy fly in b17s capturing the war as it unfolded on film. Not something to react to but being someone interested in and involved in filmmaking seems like a documentary you would thoroughly enjoy.

I got the same feeling watching this episode as I did when I watched Hacksaw Ridge. The feeling of generals, sitting in a comfortable room, far from battle, perhaps finishing their coffee after a nice breakfast, deciding which military objectives are strategic; perhaps even moving big chess-like pieces around on a large-scale map. "Okay", one of the generals might say, "We're agreed. On Okinawa, we need the men to scale a 400-foot cliff and drive the Japanese out of their tunnels and entrenched positions." "Yes", another general might say, "and on Peleliu, we need to get those soldiers across that airfield and into those hills." You hope like hell, the generals are right. That whenever one of those chess pieces is moved, the horrific loss of life and the physical and emotional trauma suffered by our young boys is, in some conceivable way, justified. The enemy must be defeated, yes, but if 1000 young men are being sent to their deaths today, to accomplish some new military objective, it had better be for a damn good reason. Anything else is unacceptable. Life is too precious.

Good reaction. I can tell this stuff affects you. Me too. Sidney did seem to put a slightly positive spin on Eugene's chances of survival to Eugene's parents. Understandable. I can't stand being thirsty. Hard not to pull for Leckie and Eugene. Eugene is becoming more hardened. Anybody would after crossing that airfield. Also, does seem like an interesting relationship (friendship) evolving between Eugene and Snafu. I agree with your anger. I feel the same. Always have. All war, but context for me is WWII (f*ck Hitler and the Japanese military leadership), the Vietnam War (seemed so misguided), WWI (extravagant example of nobility using the poor as pawns to fight/die), and the Civil War (the evil of fighting to maintain slavery).

some extra notes: The look Sid Phillips gives Dr Sledge at the end of their convo is the look someone gives when they know the other person really knows the true reality. Sledge said that crossing the airfield was the most terrifying thing he had ever done in all of his life. The marines that were under Ack Ack's leadership looked up to him like he was their father, the most respected person in their unit. Sledge said in his memoir that most of them know who exactly hit the marine having the nightmare killing him, but no one in the unit would ever admit to who it was and took it to their grave. Obviously because they knew it had to be done like Snafu said.
