While they were vulnerable, the b17s were renowned for their ability to take a beating and somehow still fly. 8th wasn't the only airforce, by this point, Germans and Italians had been pushed out of Africa and the 9th and 12th Air Forces were there flying over the Med into targets out of range of the 8th. Later those two would merge and form the 15th AirForce in Italy which is where my grandfather ended up as a waist gunner. This kinda shows the strategy of the bombing as a whole, One thing to fight their tanks and planes in battle but here they are trying to destroy critical manufacturing bottlenecks and infrastructure with things like ball bearings, engine plants, fuel refineries and the railroad martialling yards that were used to ship it all to the fronts then the brits like we already saw, had given up specific targets so went out to destroy and dehouse the factory workers themsleves. In their eyes for a fully mobilized war economy, is there really such thing as a civilian. As bad as it was for the first task force that we saw, it was even worse for the Schweinfurt groups behind them. Being early in the day they not only were able to rearm and refuel the squadrons on their flight path but had time to fly more in from out of range to fuel up and harass the 2nd group in and back to England. If you do the math sent out nearly 4000 aircrew between both bomberd and escort fighters on this mission.

Of the 306 missions flown by the 100th between June 25, 1943, and April 20, 1945, just 8 accounted for nearly half of its losses. “The group would go several months without any casualties and then on one mission might lose half [of its men],” notes the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum

Oh I just knew that someone was going to get trapped in those ball turrets. I was expecting it and it was still awful.

Wow, Ames! That was a rough one! How about the shot where pieces of aircraft are literally raining down out of the sky... what a nightmare! According to vulture.com, the Eighth Air Force’s second-in-command, General Ira C. Eaker, adamantly opposed the dual-target raid. He unsuccessfully tried to persuade his bosses in Washington that if it went ahead, the casualties would be monstrous. His objections were dismissed, and the result was a total of 60 American bombers and 600 airmen lost — the most disastrous operation of the American air war up to that point.

Couple things for ya. Austin Butler = Buck Callum Turner = Bucky ;) The B-17 itself was known as "The Flying Fortress". I think you were calling the formation the "fortress" but it's actually the plane. You said poor Quinn when the plane exploded and the man in the turret died. That was Baby Face. Quinn was the one who had to leave him in it. This wasnt the first time they actually dropped bombs. If you remember, episode one is where they had to drop them in the channel. Episode 2 they dropped their bombs on the submarine pens in Norway and then flew back over Scotland so Curt had a safe place to land.

One rather horrifying fact is that the 8th Air Force lost more men KIA than the Marine Corps did, 26,000 killed. And you know the shit the Marines faced since you're watching the Pacific now.

In November 42 American and British troops invaded North Africa. German and Italian troops surrendered in May of 43. Around 250,000 were captured. The raid in this episode was in August 43 so all of North Africa from Morroco to Egypt was in Allied hands. This raid shows why the British Air Force had switched to nighttime bombing. Losses during daylight were to heavy to maintain. At this time no fighter aircraft had the fuel to escort the bombers all the way to their targets so German fighters would wait for our fighters to go home and then would attack the bombers. 60 bombers were shot down and 95 more were heavily damaged. 129 reached Africa but only 80 would fly again. Those conducted a bombing ran in France on the way back to England. Germany generally followed the Geneva Convention on the western front so thousands of airmen were made P.O.W.s during the war. Against the Russians the Germans ignored the conventions and treated captured Russians harshly if not killing them outright. Almost 3 million Russian P.O.W.s died in German prison camps.

11 of the 21 bombers made it. Surely worth it? Destroyed the factory. Stunning visuals in this series.
