This must be the naturist district again because Juno’s doing some leisurely shopping while complete naked but for her backpack and a sick pair of toe-less hi-tops. Not just that, but her rabbit friend from “Beach Day” is picking out something for them to share later. (What could it be??) It can’t be too important because I hadn’t even figured it out by the time coloring was well underway but I’m sure it’ll be thematically appropriate. This is usually a really fun stage in the process, before all the details have to congeal and the general feeling of the moment holds a lot of sway. Scenes like this are ripe for hiding an item or two that might only have meaning to me, but I’ve been rewarded for such easter eggs in the past.

I sketched the first layout in a fairly hazy state at the end of a long day and it shows. But all the vital bits are in there, like how the store shelves frame them in kind of an alcove and their bodies follow these fat gesture lines (Juno’s tummy will fall more in line with that convex curve before this is all done). I’ve been eager to try framing characters in their environment in more obvious and deliberate ways, maybe to elevate them and show they’re worthy of that kind of attention. This also has the effect of sinking them into their surroundings, which maybe says something different but still worth exploring. This is also the first chance I’ve had all year to draw such a lovely butt!

Ooohhhh. This is absolutely wonderful!

Beeton

I dig this naturist district.

Jakerabbit

The Binturong shopkeeper smoking a pipe in the background is just on point. Again with the background details and characters that I love to look for you in your art! Something I loved doing with the Blacksad comics, as well!

Skyler

Both characters are stunning!

Bryn Husky

The subtle part of Juno holding her tail is so cute! Your expressions and ability to make characters feel so alive even at the rough stages of a piece is incredible!

Viridia

Ooh, what are those feline heads up in the rafters? Gives it the vibe of an occult store, at least at this early stage.

Viridia

BTW, have you ever gone out for a day of naked shopping IRL? If not, I recommend Cap d'Agde! A wild and sometimes weird experience, but very worthwhile.

ThatDirgeDude

I totally agree with this as well! I love seeing the world around these pieces!

Admiral Storm

This is looking amazing! I can't wait to see the finished work!

ThatDirgeDude

I can't wait to see the final story being woven here and the final decisions involved, but this looks like the kind of shop that would sell some premium incense or myrrh-type products! Possibly some other types of goods as well... But I'll stick with the myrrh idea! XD

Collector Canine

This looks like it's going to be absolutely incredible! I adore Juno, amazing butts, and naturism. Super hyped to see this finished! Really wish I could live in that naturist district...

patient_zaero

Doesn’t tail-holding, at least in the fandom, usually mean being shy? Is Juno’s friend picking something up that could be considered ’naughty’? Or is Juno spying someone outside that her pre-occupied friend is totally oblivious to?

patient_zaero

So that place is for real! Seen pictures, but having an affirmation conformation is very helpful!

Viridia

It's very real! And you can indeed buy groceries, go out for lunch, hit the beach, shop for cock rings, go out clubbing, and more completely nude. Some people get righteous about it because it's admittedly been taken over by swingers and has gotten fairly sexualized, but I don't mind, anywhere where I don't have to put on clothes for a full week is up my alley.

Kalahari

I could just keep coming back here. There's enough drawing material to keep me busy for a while.

Kalahari

The background characters are an awesome opportunity to do some worldbuilding and I'm trying not to squander it. For real, Blacksad does that just about as well any other work I've seen, and they can be wonderfully expressive about whatever moment they're caught up in.

Kalahari

It's a safe bet that there's some myrrh in there, but as with anything you might have to do some digging. I love these kinds of shops irl where you get stunlocked by the sheer variety of stuff on the shelves x3

Kalahari

Bryn!! I love sneaking in some tail holding when I can. They have a knack for getting dirty. And knocking things over...

Kalahari

I really like the shyness component. It's like a built-in security blanket some of these characters take around with them everywhere. I had a couple ideas about what's on Juno's mind, and if I do any kind of follow-up it might expand upon that...

Kalahari

It's a nice escape whenever I sketch a scene in this naturist district ^^ You won't have to wait much longer to see the finished thing!

Kalahari

I used to just keep the rough stage to myself, but it's been fun getting peoples' takes on those scribblings :)

Kalahari

I made up a couple ceremonial masks, which I rarely see in such stores but they're always a treat. Oh yeah, I've definitely heard of Cap d'Adge and it's something of a bucket list item! No idea when I would find myself in the area, but it would be worth it as a destination on its own. That seems like the closest experience to an actual naturist district :D I know it's not all just innocent nudity, but I'm not deterred at all. So you've been? Was it a good experience?

Beeton

Heheheh. Gooooood.

Viridia

I've been to Cap twice, and I had a great time there! It's surreal in the best way to be able to wander around streets and grocery stores and bakeries and restaurants completely nude for days on end, knowing that you won't have to wear anything again for any reason until the moment you leave. (Though this does require planning, because most restaurants will strangely convert to clothed-only establishments for dinner-- but there are workarounds!) The open sexuality is mostly confined to a few well-known areas, and even though I'm ace myself, I genuinely enjoy being around it and soaking in that atmosphere-- just as I don't understand why bodies need to be hidden, I don't understand why sex or arousal need to be hidden either. (I have a hunch you feel similarly, given how seamlessly you meld the two in some of your art.) All in all, Cap feels like a window into a world where shame is no longer relevant, and I like that very much. You should also look into the Île du Levant, an entire small naturist island off the French Riviera. It's also a self-contained naturist village, but much less crazy and much more "small beautiful resort town where everyone happens to be nude." I stayed there for four days last year (the longest stretch I've ever gone completely without clothes), and in many ways I loved it even more. The Île du Levant and Cap d'Agde together would definitely be worth a summer flight to France!

patient_zaero

We should (all!) plan a trip! Imagine those places being taken over by furries? You only have to pack your head and paws. Gives new meaning to the term: “Poodling”!

Kalahari

I've never looked into Île du Levant, but this has to go on the bucketlist now too... That really does sound like the best kind of surreal. It would be a dream to experience it for myself. There already a vague kind of de-programming I feel when given the opportunity to go without clothes for days on end, but this has so far only been in the context of nudist festivals and only for like 3 days max. And open sexuality was never a part of that, so I have yet to get that kind of experience myself. Cap sounds like as close as an experience as you could get to stepping into another world (or another version of this world) where clothing just never emerged as a necessity. I've got to ask you for some travel tips when the time comes :)

Viridia

Deprogramming is such a good word for it: chucking out nonsensical societal and religious bullshit and finding your own way of moving through the world that actually makes sense. (Meaning, in this case, doing it without clothes.) I'd be more than happy to share travel tips at some point! And I'd be curious to hear more about the nudist festivals you've been to. That's an experience I've never had myself.
