New members of my beloved order Carnivora don't get described too often, and when they do it seems like it's usually a graduation up from a subspecies-level classification. New cat species are especially rare, but a week ago we got one! (courtesy of a peer-reviewed article in Current Biology) It took whole genome sequencing to tell it apart from other extremely similar tiger cats, but the tilcayo is now the newest-described cat species in the world (Leopardus tilcayo). She lives in the tropical montane forests in the eastern foothills of the Andes and is indifferent to visitors at best.

So I did this color sketch as my contribution to the swelling pool of hastily rendered fan art. I really pushed the line multiply layer to red on this one -- usually I hate merging character layers, which leaves a reddish fringe where the lineart extends past the base colors. But here I'm actually very happy with it and I think this may be more a feature than a bug and I want to play with it more.

We forgot to talk about this! I knew you were gonna be so excited to draw this!

Kiko

So good!, these have always been wonderful to see!

Admiral Storm

She is lovely! Hope we will be seeing more of her!

Rule 621: As soon as they are scientifically described, there is furry art of them.

Stewart

She’s very pretty! It was lovely to hear about their discovery 🙂

MountainGoat

I am hoping this species gets a lot of art, love them <3

DeltaRedWolf

I love her sooo much, this is definitely my favorite color sketch of yours so far! The yellow sky with the pop of red on the lineart is so lovely 🥰 and I adore this new kitty species, but you made her even better!! 💛💛

Everyone going nuts over the new Tilcayo discovery. (Last one was, what, a hundred years ago?)

Kalahari

We gotta catch up on it :D It's not everyday a (cool) new species gets described. Last year I drew Bastetodon, and like 13 years ago I drew the olinguito. There was a new weasel discovered last year, but I never got around to it :P

Kalahari

Not every new species gets this kind of attention. But we all love kitties, so it tracks! Yep, over 100 years ago was the last cat described before the tilcayo (the Uruguayan pampas cat).

Kalahari

One of the first things I did after learning about the new species was checking what art had been done. People were ON IT with the tilcayo o.o

Kalahari

They're already on track. I don't know the last time I've seen so much love for a new species!

Kalahari

A lot went right with this little study. And I guess that's why I do them to begin with, to take little risks and see what works. I'm very curious to add more of those red accents to finished pieces.

Rule 621 needs to be made a thing! The Tilcayo should help with that immensely! Fursuits should follow within the next year!
