Relationships in Burn Bright 🦋 Cobalt Empire Siblings

November's poll has closed, and the results are in! We'll be discussing the relationships between the Cobalt Empire siblings, taking a deeper look at the dynamics between Ben, his brothers, his sisters, and all the bonds in between! We're super excited for another Burn Bright focused pod and can't wait to gush about the Cobalt fam!

For those who are new to our Patreon, we'll be compiling the questions you ask here in a Q&A format for the Monthly Podcast! We try to answer as many as we can, but we won't spoil future events of novels. We'll cover all on-page interactions. Any holes to fill or "reactions" you haven't seen, we typically prefer writing them as bonus scenes or in books.

After Harriet offers to blow him, Charlie had a change of attitude towards Ben. He was way less harsh on him than before. Do all of the siblings view the Rochester family to be as big of an enemy as Eliot? I know all Cobalts think they’re a threat and don’t like them, but he’s the only one who seems to be so vocal about it and none of his family really ever chimes in when he says something.

Can you explain how Eliot admonishes Tom for fantasizing about Leo, but he doesn’t see a problem with himself fantasizing about his “enemy’s sister” or Ben being with Harriet? Seems hypocritical to me.

Ben was pretty much written as an outcast in other books and he drifted further and further away from his family (maybe less from Audrey?). We knew very little from him. Will we actually see these relationships with his brothers re-build in other books or bonuses? It'd be so sad if we don't. What will these relationships look like?

What’s Audrey’s relationship with each ones of her siblings? We saw that she’s closest to Ben because of their age, the sisterhood with Jane, and the bickering with Charlie, but with Beckett, Eliot and Tom?

Tom was in a podcast (maybe the all about him?). They said he likes them because they’re little chaos makers. Charlie from that bonus scene of him riding out with Marrow and Ripley to see Sulli climb that rock.

Audrey seemed distant to Maeve (physically) in the bonus scene about her sweet sixteen, but that’s just what I picked up on, no confirmation on her feelings about them. And we got like no Maeve interaction in BB so we didn’t really get to see any of this aspect.

Out of all the brothers, Beckett and Charlie seem to be the most private with their sex lives. But just how much would they be willing to share. Specifically, had Beckett and Charlie been involved in the bathroom scene where Tom, Eliot, and Ben all reveal who the last person they got off to was, would they have answered? Would they have revealed the when but not the who?

Hey, I hope this fits the podcast since it’s about some scenes between Charlie and Ben so I noticed that in the book, there’s a few lines by Ben were he said he wanted to die, like there’s a line early on where he said that he’s the runt of the pack, the one that should’ve died early on, after the Audrey frat situation where’s he in the car with Charlie he almost wants to tell him just kill me, but then remembers the blood would get in Becketts car, then when Charlie finds him in Alaska, Ben tells him “you wanna get it over with then? Just do it Charlie, no one has to know” something alone those lines, asking Charlie to basically kill him, I know in nobody like us he told Donnelly he didn’t care what happened to him, but I didn’t realize the extent, will this ever be addressed, maybe in another cobalt empire book?

I know Jane and Audrey have a very close sister bond 💕 and Jane’s even said ‘there are too many boy!’ in SKOP, do any of the brothers ever feel like same? Where they’re all annoying each other and wish Jane or Audrey were there? (I’m the only girl and when I was younger I feel like my brothers would seek me out specifically just to annoy me lol)

I’m surprised you guys didn’t choose to just have Eliot and Tom room together at the end of BB. It seemed a more obvious choice than one of them rooming with Ben. Can you comment on why you chose to not have them room together?

I know you had played around with inserting a sibling POV in BB (similar to Banks in SLU), but that obviously didn’t pan out. Was there a POV that almost made it, and whose was it? And if not, and you had to choose a sibling POV to add for a chapter in BB (hypothetical), who would you pick?

But between the twins themselves, do they actually share those details with each other example like the parties Beckett goes to? We’ve seen that Moffy and Jane both have security outside their bedrooms whenever they bring a hookup home. However, Ben didn’t have Novack on watch when he brought Harriet over and Oscar didn’t hang around when Tom hooked up with RJ in the bonus. Do any of the other Cobalt brothers have security on watch when they bring girls/guys by the apartment? Does security stand outside their bedrooms (in the apartment), or in the hall of the building?

Of Roxanne /RJ (i know there cousins but they feel like there close like siblings) and Phoenix/Birdie which of the cobalt siblings would you relate to having the same strong relationship? For example Charlie/Beckett is there close relationship similar to how Roxanne and RJ are to each other, if not what sibling relationship are the closer to being like. The same question for Phoenix/Birdie etc ..

In Burn Bright the relationship between Ben and Charlie changes so much - Charlie is so harsh on Ben when he first arrives and especially in the escape room scene. Ben theorises that Charlie only goads him on when there are others there to intervene and that he does this so it purposefully never comes to a physical fight - is this true from Charlie’s perspective ? Does Charlie see a different side to Ben’s overly emotional traits now that he realises Ben has OCD and this impacts his emotional state at times ? Does Charlie regret the way he has acted with Ben in his childhood or is he incapable of this - we know that Ben says Charlie has no empathy for anyone besides Beckett. As a side note I am so excited to see how this relationship continues to manifest throughout the rest of the series ! I genuinely feel that they are so much more similar than they think and also think it’s fascinating that their love interests mirror each other, Harriet is sharp, intelligent and guarded like Charlie whereas we know that Roxanne is soft - something that Ben very much is. Such as interesting dynamic for the two most dissimilar Cobalt siblings ! 💙

I really loved the dynamic between the siblings during the frat house confrontation scene. I thought it was so interesting how all of them instinctively look to Charlie in different ways — Audrey turning to him for reassurance (“tell me this is just the death of my common sense”), Tom looking to him to get the frat to stop filming and Ben looking to him for answers about the drug used and whether Audrey will be okay. So I’m curious — at this point in the series, does Charlie actually realise he’s that person for his siblings, or is he still in denial about the role he plays in their lives / sees himself as falling short in comparison to Maximoff ? Also… Charlie rubbing Bens back in the car afterwards KILLED ME DEAD !!!!

Is there any tv/pop culture sibling dynamic that reminds you guys of any Cobalt sibling pairing? For example, I've convinced myself that Birdie and Phoenix are tethered to Sam and Dean. Which is an insane statement to make given that not only have we not met either of them, but literally the only evidence I have to back it up are their Pinterest boards (but we’ve long established that my sanity concerning this universe is questionable at best).

I don’t know if this is considered a spoiler, but I know in a previous podcast you mentioned that Charlie would probably be more open with his love interest than he could ever be with his cousin Luna, but does that also include Beckett? Is the transparency that he has with Beckett equal to what he’ll have with Roxanne, or will Roxanne some how reach a part of him that even Beckett is unable to touch? Is it the same for Beckett? I know it’s not really a Burn Bright question, but this is literally my first month subscribing, so I thought why not ask.

Harriet doesn’t seem to dwell on the past unless she’s actively confronting it, which is unlike her partner Ben. Is that something you considered about her character? How she handles trauma from her past? Or is it genuinely not that deep to her? Do you think we’ll learn more about her past even as we move on to other books or is that just how she is? A roll with the punches kind of girl? I don’t know if that makes sense, but feel free to tell me if I’m just missing something. Looking for any reason to re read.

Hahah Ive been bringing it up to all my friends in the fandom for the past couple weeks I can’t stop thinking about it 😭 I’m not necessarily talking about their personalities but more their family dynamic? On Phoenix’s Pinterest board he seems more…jaded? Yet that aspect isn’t present on birdie’s board. It’s kinda like Phoenix was raised by his father and and Birdie was raised by Phoenix the same way it was with Dean/Sam/john. Sam and Birdie might have both been allowed to preserve an aspect of innocence since their older brothers protected them
