Time to finally reveal the next project! I have been so excited for this one. My good friend Stan who helped me with the Stagea build and I have been working on the CAD for this one behind the scenes for almost a year now. (I say helping, really I just fumbled around and gave him directions on what to do, he's absolutely carried this project so far.)Here it is the day it was dropped off.As you can see it's an absolute shitbox and I couldn't be happier with it. it's so bad that the guy selling it didn't believe me when I saw this parts car up for sale and said I'd buy the whole thing. Especially when I told him this was my first time buying a car in Japan and rather than get something I could actually use, I chose to get this hahah. For those who are unfamiliar it's a Toyota MR-S (Third generation Toyota Mr2 Spyder) which is in my opinion, a criminally under-rated car, which is exactly what I like to work on.I have some very extensive plans for this and can say without a doubt that this will be my most ambitious build ever and quite possibly one of the most extreme exterior car transformations on YouTube when the series kicks off.A quick rundown of why I chose this car outside of it being an overlooked classic. For this build I wanted something mid-engined that would be at home on a race track. However I didn't want something built from the ground up as a race car. The end goal with this is to have something street legal that looks like it came straight out of LeMans in the 90's.This build will be unlike anything I've done on my channel before, not cyberpunk, not a typical widebody / stance build, but something that taps into this nostalgic 90's feeling that I've been bringing up a lot lately. As mentioned, this car was picked for it's mid engine layout, just ignore that it's got no engine in it at all right now though which isn't a problem because for what I wanted to do, the original 1ZZ 1.8L engine was not going to be enough. So yes this will be my first engine swap on my channel, but don't get too excited because I want to do the exterior of this build first and to put things in perspective, the Stagea was a simple widebody and fender conversion and that took me 2 years (1 year if I wasn't working on the MX5 as well) This build is going to be a complete replacement of every single panel on this car. The only piece of the original bodywork that will remain will be the windshield and A-pillar.To illustrate the extreme level that we're going to, in order to get the wheels and ride height to work we'll actually be completely removing and redesigning both the front and rear suspension systems, along with a majority of the framework for the front of the car.I honestly don't think I could have got luckier with this car showing up for sale. The terrible condition meant I could get it for dirt cheap, only ¥50,000 (around $550 NZD) and it also gives me the opportunity to do a really good make-over.You guys will know one of my favorite things to do is taking really shitty cars and turning them into something cool and this is easily one of the shittiest cars I've ever bought. As for what I'll be doing with it, I don't want to completely spoil that right now as we're still putting the finishing touches on the model, but I've showed the work-in-progress CAD model to a few people in person at meets and the Japanese grandpas that show up while I'm working in my garden and so far the response from everyone has ranged from speechless to mindblown.I'm confident you guys are going to absolutely love it and I can't wait to announce it on the channel very soon. We're only a couple weeks now from finished with the CAD and then I'm going to commission some nice renders and then we can finally get started into ripping the body apart. I hope you guys stick around for this journey, it's going to be a long one but I've been itching to get started on it since half way through the Stagea build.

Bring it on, and take as long as you want – I like watching projects more than seeing finished cars driven.

Excited to see the renders, and even more excited to see you get started! I always liked the little MR2, here in the States they were always overshadowed by the Miata, and to a lesser extent, the Porsche Boxter. But these had a fun design that always made me smile when I saw one on the road. I’m sure you’re gonna make something really special.

Awwwww yeeeaaaaahhhhhhh!!!! So hyped! Love that this is gonna be a huge project. Think of all the sanding!

Can’t wait Mate. Knowing the Cyber Miata and the Wide-Body Stagea, I’m sure this next design is going to be a serious head-turner.

I‘m really looking forward to this car. Projects that will take longer are better in my point of view, because you can tell more details. The term „street legal“ is a little bit worrying. Here in Germany you can’t put anything on your car without being screwed by the police 😂😂

Cheers dude. And I feel like this generation of the MR2 especially never got the love. Everyone loves the first and second gens, but this one was a bit of an ugly duckling and people had moved on by then.

Building this car is half the reason I moved to Japan where they are a bit more forgiving with custom vehicles than NZ which is on par with the TUV in it's level of strictness. Rest assured it's going to look like nothing else on the road. This wont be just a typical YouTube bodykit and paint build.

Sounds great. Would it be legal to get it passed inspection in Japan and drive it around in Europe? I live around 15km away from the Nürburgring and have access to a little bit „backstage“ of it, but really custom cars are not comment to see here.

Tofu Auto Works

Cheers mate. It's going to be on a whole other level from my previous builds.

The reason I'm building it off an MRS rather than from scratch is so that I will be able to sell them as kits. I really don't know too much about Europe, but if they allow kit cars or cars like the Veilside RX7 then this shouldn't be too much more of a stretch than that besides the suspension.

Oh how did I miss this!? I'm currently on my 4th MR-S and have made it my mission to convince all my mx-5 buddies to give it a go. A very simple and silly car, I can't picture myself in anything else. The way all the body panels can just be unbolted, I've wondered why these got left behind in the crazy 2000's. Glad to see you're building one! I'm especially interested in what you plan to do with the suspension as it's always been top of the mind as its weakest point both for performance and aesthetics.

Such a fantastic car once you fix up a few of it's weak points like the exterior, engine, and suspension haha. The suspension is getting completely replaced and we hope that what we make will still handle as good as the originals. Engine swap too, and obviously we'll be making the most of having every body panel unbolt from the car.
