We'll start with the good news since I'm currently in a pretty good mood, but it did take me about a month to get around to posting this update... so yeah...There's actually a whole bunch of good news, but the biggest of all of them is that I have a brand new project coming in in the next couple weeks for a customer here in Japan. It's one of my all time absolute dream cars and I'm happy beyond words to be able to work on one. So I'm super excited for that. There's also even more updates and some pretty cool announcements coming for the MR-S and the Twin builds coming soon as well that I hope to have videos up for in the coming weeks once I finish repairing the Silvia bodykit. And lastly some nice news is that some friends recently stopped by from New Zealand for a quick visit and we spent a couple weeks road-tripping around Japan, hiking, sightseeing, eating and just having an awesome time. It was great and I definitely felt like the break has re-invigorated me and I'm super pumped to get back to working on these builds. But that means now it's time to talk about the not so awesome news, and I think some of you may have seen the writing on the wall here. To make a really long story short, this will be my last year in Japan as the recent visa changes have made it effectively impossible for me to stay here. I know that sounds really not cool, and I'm sure some of you are thinking of other things I could try to get around it but please trust me when I say I have thought about absolutely everything, even getting a "job" for another company just to stay here on a work visa. But at the end of the day, everything was just so messy and it was going to take up so much time and money just dealing with the paperwork and everything else that honestly comparing staying here and struggling vs just moving back to NZ it's really made up my mind for me on returning to NZ.I've really enjoyed my time here in Japan and the friends I've made and people I've met I will endeavor to hold on to forever. The world is going through a bit of a rough patch right now and it's really not a great time to be a foreigner, especially in Japan. While I wont be living here anymore, I do not plan to sell my house or garage. My plan has always been to live in both Japan and New Zealand, and while I would have preferred that to be most of my time in Japan with brief visits back to NZ, it looks like it's going to be the other way around. I'll aim to return to Japan maybe once a year for a max of 3 months on the standard tourist visa. In that time I'll work on my Japan builds and do odd jobs for friends and customers here. So it's really not the end of the world and while it did kinda sting when I first realized this was happening, I've spent the past couple weeks getting over it and honestly actually getting pretty excited about moving back to NZ where you don't need to have an AC running 24/7 and the standard power grid has more than 100V coming out of it. And then to make this like a bad news sandwich I'll finish off with another bit of good news which is that I've already secured a piece of land in NZ (thanks mum and dad) and will be building a brand new garage, this time not full of dust or asbestos. So yeah, that's sort of what's been going on in the background here the past couple months actually, figured it was time to finally let you know.I'll be announcing this in an upcoming video, maybe not my next one but probably the upcoming MR-S video. No new pictures or updates to share on the builds just yet but here's a few pics I grabbed during the road trip and on some of the hikes.

日本に住めなくなるのは残念です。 またいつでも帰ってきてください。 何か協力できることがあれば仰ってください、できるだけお手伝いします。

Bummer. I saw how hard the new PM was making it for foreigners and did wonder if it was going to affect you too. Still, as you say, it’s not over, just a different version of the vision. Guess we’ll just have to get used to Wind and Sheep noises in the background again. Looking forward to the next vids. All the best Mate.

Yup, just gotta roll with the punches. It sucks because I just put that job posting up and had about 10 applications and most of them looked really good and were excited to work with me here in Japan.

Jake Adelstein been talking about the legal challenges. Unhappy about it. It’s the wrong direction for Japan. You’ve a holiday home, the next PM may reverse course & it will work out.

That's what we're expecting. Everyone can see that these changes are going to cause more harm than good to Japan but just like anywhere else in the world, it's much easier for the govt to just throw a minority group under the bus than actually try solve problems. It's very easy to get incredibly annoyed by it all so I try just get on with my day without thinking about it

I’ve a 20 year old who is 100% bilingual - if they toss that requirement at you. She passed the JLPT at N1.

I've got no shortage of workers that have applied which is the frustrating thing. I've got everything except the 30 million yen, because nobody outside of Chinese real estate developers has that sort of money. Every single requirement met except the capital which increased by 600% in one year with effectively no warning. If you took the average Japanese worker, it would take around 20 years for them to save up that much money, assuming nothing ever went wrong and they never had any significant purchases.

It’s $200,000 — if I ran PR for Toyota, Subaru or Mazda I’d pony up & declare you a contracted design studio.

$330,000 NZD, plus the roughly $250,000 I've already spent on the house and garage and tools that's over half a million NZD just to stay here and earn NZ minimum wage. I've already had a very VERY respectable company that I can guarantee everyone here will know offer to do that for me. I met the CEO one time and we got talking about all the 3D scanning and CAD work I incorporate into my fiberglass and he was quite interested. They created a remote work position for me if I wanted it but by that stage I'd already mentally checked out of living in Japan. It's just so much work to make all that happen and I'd be losing more time to paperwork and dealing with the govt for absolutely no security of staying here. They've already shown they can change vise reqs at the drop of a hat. My friends that live here with their wife and kids and have been here for over a decade can't even get PR anymore so they've just given up.

Damn. What about the cars? They're all getting shipped back to NZ? You just got them all to Japan! What a pain. Good luck bud. We'll be here to watch long videos of you sanding.

I guess another bit of great news is that I only shipped one of my cars over and not the whole fleet. I'm not going to have enough cash lying around after all this to justify shipping the S13 straight back to NZ so it will be staying in Japan for the time being. Currently talking to a friend here that was thinking of starting an import export business between Japan and NZ so I might be able to coordinate with him on getting the Twin and some other cars shipped to NZ somewhere down the line. Fortunately we already have another MR-S in NZ already so at least that one I don't need to ship. Since I haven't started any of the difficult work on the body it's still cheaper for me to just reprint all the moulds and start again over here than to try ship it.

OMG i totally forgot about the twin. we have to get it to NZ

Tofu Auto Works

The Twin is probably the car I want to bring back to NZ the most out of everything here. It even looks like I should be able to get it road legal which would be hilarious in NZ with all the Ford Rangers on the road.
