I think the reason why shinigamis don't know they can add the name later, or how they can manipulate their victims like Light, is because they don't need to find out the name later. They just know it, write it down, take the bonus years for themself, moving on.

I really like your perspectives on Raye writing down names. I've watched this countless times and never really thought about the consequences of him unknowingly using the note. Always something new!

At the beginning of the episode light mentions you can write the description of death then add the name later and it will still work. He covered the details of death in that envelope and left openings where raye would write the names, the first being his superior who, being controlled by the death note before death, would send the rest of the identies to raye. Then raye filled in the rest.

Great episode, you're early in, but I'm sure you can tell why its considered a 'must watch' classic already.

Did you thought about the consequence to Raye for using the Deathnote? Now he’s soul won’t be able to go to heaven nor hell. That’s the part that bothers me

To be fair and I think this is only in the manga or maybe just discussed at a different time but basically that was Ryuk being tricky spoilers (sorta?) ahead for the girls if they read comments: Light concludes in the manga in the conversation about death note users not going to an afterlife that there IS no heaven or hell and Ryuk agrees. Ryuk was probably messing with him just to see his reaction but it seems using the death note doesn't actually affect where you go because there isn't an afterlife at all.

I don't think a Shinigami should know all functions of the Death Note - that's like saying anyone working with a PC has to know each and every single aspect of how a PC and the app they're using works - like knowing all the formulas in an Excel-sheet by heart

"First, write down your boss's name on the top spot and to prove he and I are friends he will send you a file with names and photos of the people to be invited." Penbar writes his boss's name... but hidden next to that slot where he can't see it's already written "Dies of a heart attack but first sends a file of agent names and photos to Penbar." Controlled by the Death Note, his final act is to send all of the secret agent names and photos. Penbar then writes out the list of names... and hidden underneath it already says next to each name "Dies of a heart attack while looking for a pickleball racket." And thus a bizarre thing happened, the entire force each got a pickle ball racket as if about to enjoy a nice game, instead they all died. A mystery it was... Unsolvable! 🧐
