Had to catch up just so I could watch this episode as soon as I could!

Its so relatable. Whether its your final game with the school or not. I remember my jr year we were ranked 5th in our state for division two in baseball. (Theres 4 divisions D1 being the biggest based on school enrollment) and our playoffs were districts, regionals, quarter, semi ,finals. And the way match ups were decided were based entirely on draw out of a hat. 5 teams in our district so there was one play in game known as pre-districts. And we just happened to draw the one team in our district that is ranked 2nd in our state for that pre-district game. The game ended up going into extra innings where we lost 3-2. They went on to make it all the way to the semi-finals blowing out every team along the way. And then my senior year the day before districts in practice it had just rained so the ground was really soft and my foot got stuck in the ground when our coach was hitting us fungo and I suffered a high ankle sprain and was out for 4 weeks including summer ball. So, I had to watch from the dugout. And when that last loss happen all of us seniors just sat there in silence for a solid 25 minutes. Some of us in tears. And watching this just brought back that emotion we all felt in those moments. It just does an awesome job at capturing that moment.

Thanks for sharing that story at the end. Really cool to learn a little more about you guys.

This is something you learn about sports anime. The protagonists don't always win. It's more about how they rebound and grow

The eating scene may be my favorite scene of season 1. It perfectly shows the emotions that bubble up from a rough loss like this. Like the weight of the failure, but also the release of tension? And how important it is the refill on energy after such a hard performance.

I think they knew they could lose. I think their background with sports and even with anime (JJK, OP, AOT etc. have their stories defined by lost battles). I think it's more so how well Haikyuu is able to portray the afterwards. I think this is the first time a slice of life segment of the anime wasn't in another world with a fantasy aspect. This was a "real" high school sports game with "real" highschoolers. So I think they are now experiencing how Sports anime in particular can hit harder than most anime stories just due to how well they can portray real moments that we all experience.

Every time they show Kageyama's flashback i think of him saying "Until one day I set the ball... and there was no one to spike it..."

Just like your favorite team, or a team with a friend of yours, or your own team you play on.... We grew to cherish every player and see them bond and become the best together and it was personally heartbreaking to see them lose. They were outstanding!

I love how in a show where our Karasuno boys spend most of their time squawking at each other like the unruly crows they are, we're given this slow, quiet scene of them where no one says a word, and they're just together. Beautiful

Oikawa seeing the change in Kageyama and exploiting that was underhanded. Admirably smart but underhanded. 😭

A quick tutorial on how high school sports works in Japan, with an emphasis on Volleyball since we're watching Haikyuu (but the format is similar for most sports). First of all, kids in Japan generally only join 1 club for their entire high school career whether it be volleyball, basketball, marching band, sewing, science, occult (shoutout Okarun), etc. That also means that if you choose to do a sport, you're stuck doing that sport year round for the entire 3 years unlike in the States where you can be a 3 sport athlete. There are 2 national tournaments in high school Volleyball each year: the Inter High School Tournament (the one they were playing for this season) in July/August and the Spring Tournament which is held in January (TL/DR it used to be held in March but they kept the name). The good news is that the 3rd years technically are still able to compete in the Spring Tournament. The bad news is that many 3rd year players "retire" from the club so that they can study for the entrance exams for college. The whole test-taking to get into your preferred college is a whole different culture from the US and its SAT or ACT's. Kids can put in 10+ hours of study outside of school hours just to get into the college of their choice and they can start as early as a year before all for a single test which determines whether you make it in or not. The only way you can bypass those tests is if the high school is directly affiliated with a certain college or if you get a "recommendation" (akin to a sports scholarship in the US) but those are a very limited number of those in Japan. Obviously you'll have to find out for yourself what the current 3rd years decide to do, but once you decide to retire from the club it means that you're committing yourself to studying for college so you won't have the time to help out with the club.

Haylo, did you recommend this show to your former teammates? They should cry along with you
