top 5 most impactful moments for me. Never thought Luffy would say such a thing, but I think its true for Sanji, perhaps more than any other straw hat. I think (and this is my own read that I cant back up with anything really), that out of all the straw hats, Sanji is the one who is still the most broken, his wounds are still open. And for Luffy, that gives Sanji a special place in his heart, and so to some degree, Sanji is the heart of the crew. And without its heart, Luffy could never succeed.

I hated Sanji After this episode and never looked at him the same way again, because he was like trying to kill Luffy and gave him his hardest attack, that was unjustifiable .

If you felt the pacing of these two episodes was a bit odd, it's because they were originally a one-hour special after a long break of the anime. Unfortunately, binge-watching tends to make specials like these blend in and go unnoticed. That's why these episodes featured so many eyecatchers; during that hour-long broadcast, they cycled all the Straw Hats in the order they joined the crew and wrapped up with the ones featuring the sad music for Luffy and Sanji

Another thing with what Luffy says about starving to death, remember that while Luffy doesn't know or care about a lot of his crews backstories, he DOES know Sanji's, so he does know what that means to Sanji

Luffy is the type of person that stays. He stays both when you are at your best and at your worst. For as long as you need him, even when you don't realise it, he stays. And boy, if we don't all need that. Since Sanji has decided to give up his dream and passion (cooking), I like to think of Luffy temporally keeping them safe with himself, when he said "I'll be right here waiting for you" As if to say 'Your true self is safe with me, while you sort yourself out'

oda himself could tell me he didnt have this planned since at least water 7 and i would refuse to believe it. if you remember back to water 7, when robin declared that she was leaving because she had a darkness inside of her that they couldnt imagine, she was talking directly to chopper and sanji. we find out fairly soon that chopper has the monster point and now we find out that sanji was genetically modified to be an assassin of an evil royal family. that, along with how everytime ussop felt weak sanji was always the one to consider his feelings and be the one to lift him out of that place.

truly baffling to me how someone could watch this episode and not understand that sanji is sacrificing himself for the crew. baffling that people continue to hate sanji for this scene specifically (i can understand those who dislike him for his perv trope) when luffy himself knows why sanji did what he did. luffy understands its an act which is why he says those lines at the end. theres no way sanji was going to be able to kill luffy. im so glad you two have empathy and can understand sanji, too.

Well you made it through the hardest moment in my own personal opinion. Plenty more devastation to come! When I saw this, my heart dropped on the floor and shattered because as Ive said many times, hes my favorite character, just to see him have to go through this horrible torment, I didn't even know that there were extra eye catcher breaks, I probably didnt even notice any of them while watching this. I just remember being locked in and desperately trying not to hyperventilate. It was just the worst for me, and as I can see, probably the worst moment for you two as well.

This episode also highlights one thing I love about Luffy. He doesn't fight if he doesn't have a reason to. It reminds me of the bar scene in Jaya. He admits that this is a duel but he doesn't lift a finger. I love people who have this sort of restraint, especially coming from someone as powerful as Luffy.

The voice actors of luffy and sanji couldn’t stop sobbing while doing this which is why they added so many commercial breaks like you guys called them lol if you remove them the voice acting sounds extremely out of place so they added them so that your brain naturally filters out any inconsistency with the voice acting and it was all because they couldn’t read the script they where sobbing so much that they would have trouble both reading and not crying off the get go before even getting to something sad

At this point, Nami was truly done with Sanji. In Japan, Sayonara means goodbye, but when they say it, it’s usually used in a context of it being more final or long term. Usually they say Jaane or Matane as a temporary means of farewell, similar to “see you later, see you again, or wishing to see someone again.

Some people misinterpret this moment and say Sanji did this because he doesn't trust Luffy to fight for him. That's not the case. Sanji doesn't think he deserves to be rescued because he was raised by his biological father as a failure. And he carried this trauma his whole life, that's why he is always ready to sacrifice himself in almost every arc
