In case you missed it, the guy at the end WAS the emperor. He's the same guy that Fuyo fell in front of, in the flashback. So the emperor himself caught wind of Maomao's actions, even when she's trying to hide under the radar. Btw, Her name being Fuyoo (cotton rose), is fitting and they foreshadowed the hidden love story right away for anyone who speaks japanese. And yes, maomao had to trust concubine gyoukuo there to not tell on the fuyo escape bride, because fuyo and the guy and evreyone associated with them including family and children might have been executed for "crimes against the kingdome". Maomao had to trust Gyokkuo there... if gyokkuo was evil to maomao she could have also thrown her under the bus for knowing about the "potential" solve of the mystery and not telling anyone about it till then. Because haylo is right, she probably can whip up something like a caffeinated thing or other medicine to help her calm down etc, but she realized what she was doing and hid it for her sake... it shows that she has emotions but doesn't know how to expres them, and that's why she was also stressed throughout the period until the day fuyo left.

The things women had to do just to be with who they want. And it easily could have gone wrong, and probably has gone wrong for many many women trying to escape not just the rear palace but the brothels too. And that WAS the emperor at the end. I kinda love how he's just so regular and ordinary looking upon first look. So many shows have the emperor introduced sitting on a throne looking larger than life but this emperor looks like a regular guy and I think is say a lot about the character.

In case no one remembers in episode 2, the military officer was the one who stopped the villagers who were accused of poisoning the soldiers from being executed. They even cut to Lady Fuyou in the beginning of the episode, I love the foreshadowing from last episode to this one.

I don't know what I enjoy more, when you two are being scared or when you are in awe about people in love.

This is the episode that got me hooked. I was crying at the end of it came out of nowhere.

I can't wait for the next episode.

Just to be sure you know, Mao is the Chinese word for cat, so Maomao is catcat, which can be kind of translated to kitten. So the cat visualizations aren't exactly random. Also, Xiomao is basically "little cat", so a more direct way to say kitten.
