I think this sentiment is always funny (not that I disagree that her freckles are cute) because they don't really explain explicitly it in the show but in this period of time pale flawless skin was considered the pinnacle of beauty (hence the whole thing with the white face powder). Freckles would have been seen as a huge flaw.

I believe all the talk about Maomao being skinny this episode is because she lost so much weight taking care of the sick consort last episode. When she returned to the jade pavilion she was alot skinnier than before she left, most likely from the stress of keeping her alive, and being too busy to eat properly for several months.

I think throughout western history that was also the case, I think up until the late 20th century freckles became acceptable and until like this last decade they suddenly became a big beauty trend that people started putting fake freckles on themselves like maomao.

Yeah, I always thought that this show was really smart about this because her freckles are attractive to a modern audience but would be a flaw in her time so Maomao gets to have several appearances and appeal to miscellaneous audiences while being a plot point and causing emotional turmoil in Jinshi. I don't think this should be taken as disparaging freckles, only being authentic to old standards of beauty.

This was one of my most favourite episodes of the show bc it was just such a rollercoaster! i love the moment between Maomao and Jinshi so much and it never fails to make me emotional. This show has so much depth and beauty
