Im still confused, who was going to be poisoned.

the target of the poisoning was lady Lishu, but because her taster had swapped the dishes on purpose to bully her, lady Gyokyou got the poisoned dish and lady Lishu got the fish dish she was allergic to

Paulo

Oh ok thanks.

Someone poisoned Lady Lishu’s food. The taste tester swapped out the poisoned food for Lishu because she’s a “picky” eater, not knowing it was poisoned. By doing that, Lishu’s taster accidentally saved her own life since she didn’t have to taste it.

So I wont say anything for the current emperor but I think its important to remember that the emperors mother had him "very young" young enough to cause Maomao a bit of distress upon hearing that. So we know at least two of the previous emperors concubines were disturbingly young. Maomao assumed political reasons for this but that wouldn't explain the emperors mother being so young when she birthed the emperor. Though one blessing is that Lady Lishu most likely wouldn't have been made a concubine for the current emperor if she was ever 'with' the last emperor.

So to clarify: someone tried to poison lady LISHU (14 year old), that's a confirmed FACT now. But because her ladies in waiting were trolling her because "She's a picky eater" , they swapped her dish with lady gyuokkuo's dish, and even though that bullying, this time she lucked out because it was maomao that tasted the poison first and she has built-in tolerance. Otherwise that taster and lishu might have died from someone ELSE trying to poison her, and got saved because of the "Swap". Maomao brought the taster in here to basically educate her "ignorance" and subtly threatten her that she noticed that the "swap" was not an accident but bullying, and that it could have killed lishu due to her allergies REGARDLESS of whether anything was poisoned to begin with. It's similar to the white powder incident where people are ignorant and act as if they know better when they dont understand the facts. important: And while it's the soup that was poisoned, basically someone swapped the entire TRAY ( the meal set, including the macherel fish dish AND the soup that are on the same platter that they servant was holding and putting on the table from). The minister only tried the soup because he wouldn't believe that someone poisoned would be so happy and glee like maomao and thought she was exagerating or mistaken, but he F'd around and found out basically, but that was just put there to confirm that there was indeed poison involved, after the attempted poisoning, it has nothing to do with WHO poisoned the dishes.

The cooks don't necessarily know that Lishu can't eat mackerel. They could simply have been told she doesn't like it (supported by the "picky eater" complaints seen at the beginning). The food taster swapped the dishes to "punish" Lishu for being a picky eater, not knowing it was very bad for her to eat mackerel. So Lishu was the target for the poison, but her being bullied by her ladies in waiting caused the poison dish to come to Maomao instead.

yeah, welllllllll, the same way we still have flat earthers and anti-vaxers and all sorts of stubborn non-sensical people, back then people would also not believe the concept of allergies etc. Heck, up until extremely recently, people didn't even understand the concept of sanitization and hygiene in medical fields, because of know-it-all-wannabes. So even if the chefs were told "she can't eat Mackerel", they'd probably go "ergh, what a drama queen, how bougie of her nitpicky princess to not want to eat the fish we worked hard to cut and clean and prepare." I'm not saying they did it, since we know it was the ladies in waiting, but hell even friggen Gordon RAMSEY once tricked a vegan person to eat something that had meat in it, for no reason, and claiming it tasted better, regardless of that person's convinctions or potential risks for allergies. (not advocating for vegan folk, not my crowd, but if it's their beliefs or their body, we should be less ignorant and more open to understanding that sometimes it's ok that we don't know all the facts, but strive to learn and improve vs being stubborn and pretend it's a subjective opinion vs a cemented fact. That's also why maomao has that "i would murder you" look against the taster, same look as against the powder girls in the crystal pavilion: maomao can't stand ignorant people that pretend to know better.

I think one thing is probably adding to any remaining confusion. Each concubine would have received their own serving. Each would have gotten a tray with their serving of soup, fish, etc. Each food taster would have sampled from the tray for their concubine. That would be why the poison soup would only go to Lady Lishu and no one else.
