Steve.

Maomao is a freak but we love her

Great discussion at the end. This show can be quite confusing at times (intentionally), so it can really help to talk it out and/or rewatch some scenes, even if you end up not being 100% correct or fully understanding what's going on.

ahh so happy yall are enjoying the show. it just keeps getting better and better as the season progresses

It'll be funny to see how much you figure out or not! I'm usually thick as custard, but somehow in this show I picked up on subtle signals super early on. ;-) And re concubines, yes it's usually political. You could look up "Concubinage in China" on the Wiki for the real thing, or wait for the show to tell its own take on it. ;-)

Love that you are liking this show! But just a small sidenote: this is NOT a period piece, this plays in a fictional country with fictional characters and a fictional society, although they took some inspiration of real world things - but the periods they took inspiration from are all over the place.

I’m stealing “thick as custard” lol

i was for lady lishu, but her food taster swap it on purpose (she was being mean to the ''pickeater'') and that how the poison end up on maomao plate.

AttackRunRepeat

Okay I hope this helps: The "dish" would include an entire tray of foods so the fish, the soup, etc. Maomao claimed she had no idea whose fault the swap was because she doesn't want anyone to lose their life over something that had no true victims. She knows the life of a tester is insignificant as well as all the other servants.

I haven’t watched this in a while. Rewatching I was a bit confused. Her simply being mean and causing a ruckus makes sense. But there’s still more questions unanswered. Get used to that.

Caratzennie

The previous emperor actually used 9yo Lishu as a concubine, which is obviously very fucked up, but thankfully the current emperor fell far from that tree and doesn’t touch Lishu at all. IIRC he only keeps her as a high-ranking concubine so she can live like a princess, which is his way of making up for his father’s actions.

Namitia

Yess, they did good picking pieces apart and figuring it out when it got confusing for them.

Rafael Hutajulu

This additional information may or may not be necessary, but in the light novel, it is pretty clear that the “courtesan humor” that Maomao did to Lady Lihua’s lady-in-waiting is sexual assault
