Going back to the hairpins. I think they are just an indicator of one kind of favoritism or another. The quality of the material represents how important the person that favors Maomao is. Probably a way to warn any "poachers" of how risky it would be to show interest.

Lady Gyokkuo is such a gossip troll and a shit-starter :D This is an interesting discussion. You've come some interesting dialogues and statements throughout this episode: whether you're on the right track or red herrings, we'll see, but it's good to take note of those "little things" and "inconsistencies" and "random theories" that you blurt out because it would be easier to look back later at your notes to see what you know. Also, the hairpins/accessories is basically the equivalent of a school hallpass: you're not allowed to leave without one and being vouched for by a higher authority that you're not trying to run away or pull a Bueler's day off scenario. But at the time same, if a couple of love birds did find romance, or affection at the very least, the pins are used as a way to communicate interest/protection/vouching, so that they can either go out and have a date together, or go out and meet other people. Also, the type of ore/material used on the pins and accessories is similar to wedding ring jewlry... so if something is extremely expensive, people will look at it and go "oh.. whoever gave that to X person must be deep pocketed or high stature... i don't want to mess with something or someone that they dote on... and i wouldn't want to be indebted to them or worse: the target of their revenge/rage."

It's worth noting that the subtitles are a bit off. Each time Maomao's dialog is seen saying "dad", she's actually saying "oyaji", which translates closer to "old man". As in English, it's a casual term for a father in Japanese, in addition to referring to a middle-age or older man who is not related.

10 months later and it kinda hurts to see them both together and it is no big deal.

I looked this up on Google translate and it's results are "The rooster hails the dawn. We offer our thanks to you." I'm curious if that is correct or not 🤔😅
