If you don't mind mecha anime like this, def watch Eighty-Six 86. Its really good.

It's a mecha anime trope that random kids or characters just fall into circumstances to piloting a mecha. It a popular theme in Gundam animes.

Lelouch Vi Britannia commands you to watch the next episode. He did say his real name at the end of episode one upon ordering the firing squad to die.

It wasn't random, they said that he had the top marks out of the candidates of the simulator for the Lancelot. Also they're a research team not military so they dont care about rank and just chose the guy with the best preformance.

Suzaku just so happened to be rescued by Lloyd and Cécile after being shot and then given Lancerlot to pilot? Come on, it's classic Gundam style random plot device to give rando a mecha to pilot who happens to be awesome at it. It's mecha anime 101 trope at its finest!

EgregiousGrievous

BTW its a trope that has been accepted by the mecha fandom for decades since its used constantly in mecha anime since the 1970s and 80s! Yes I'm a old fart who has watch a crap ton of anime!

If you go back to the first episode, Lloyd ask Cecile where he(refering to Susaku) is and she tells Lloyd that he is on the frontlines. So them searching for him because they want him to be the pilot and making sure he is seen by the medical staff makes some sense, yes its part mecha trope but it was also set up in the first episode and didn't come out of no where.

This anime is in absolute fierce competition with Death Note as my favourite, i think Code Geass wins out by a margin. A military power invades and occupies and brutalizes the native population, stripping them of their very identity (does it remind you of a terribly unjust, horrifying, ongoing conflict somewhere in the world?), the author based this story on something like that. -- in Death Note it was really about Light going to psychotic lengths, wanting to become a 'god' and the efforts to take him down... Whereas this one is about a great and extreme injustice, I feel like there's a lot more drive, motivation and emotion at the center of the main conflict and a protagonist we enjoy wathcing and we can really root for. It also combines multiple genres seemlessly; this futuristic medievalism, mecha anime, a highschool drama and whatever supernatural/sci-fi stuff is going on with that mysterious girl and Lelouche's eye. I was HOOKED by ep 2-3. Thank you guys, it's honestly a joy watching you react to this, and I'm extremely excited to relive this anime (which I honestly havent seen in over a decade) - this is fantastic, thank you
