Not siding with either choice in this discussion but here is some information from the first episode Maomao shares: that the only people allowed in the Rear Palace are the female workers, concubines, eunuchs, the Emperor and the Emperor's family. This next part is from historical texts from the Chinese palace: Any other male person that enters the Rear palace must be come a eunuch either before the enter or if caught as part of the punishment. Based on this Jinshi is either related to the Emperor or he is a Eunuch.

24:40 Everything you're thinking is the right path of thinking or contemplate. Keep in mind, all the "Facts" in this world, including what people like maomao and ahduo and jinshi etc would claim as "Fact" is muddied by their own knowledge and bias and can only be undestood from THEIR perspective POV. The show sometimes does that, we the viewers may see things differently than the characters because we have knowledge from multiple charactersr combined. So keep that in the back of your mind that the show itself is an unreliable narrator IF a fact is told from the perspective of a CHARACTER not from the perspective of the narrator voice. :)
