the lakan reveal had me apologising to the character because i was pure on edge with him too, but ofc it shows how good the writing can be!

This episode always hits me right in the feels. 😭 Haylee wanted vindication for Lakan's story, and BOY did she get it! Ladies, your reactions are EXACTLY why I've been pushing this show since you first started Patreon haha. I KNEW it was made for you both! First, the reveal that Lakan's uncle is actually Luomen, Maomao's adoptive father! To answer your question, Lakan's condition is real. It's called Prosopagnosia (face blindness). Not recognizing faces can make reading people's emotions and intentions harder, especially when you rely on facial expressions. The well educated Dr Luomen who studied in the west recognized his nephew's condition and taught him to COPE with it rather than treating him like a failure. He even introduced him to chess, turning Lakan into a master strategist both on the board and politically as part of the Emperor's roster of talents. Basically, the "Master of Whispers" or "The Hand" from Game of Thrones! Now, here's what makes Lakan and Fengxian's story even MORE tragic. Lakan CHOSE to play Go instead of chess for their bet. He could've easily won at chess and "forced himself" on her (by claiming her as a "prize"), like those intrusive thoughts he mentioned. But he respected Fengxian and chose the game she ALWAYS beat him at, giving her a genuine chance to win. And THAT was Fengxian's test! She realized he wasn't trying to own her. He saw her as an equal, not some side-piece. That's why she sent Meimei away and welcomed him as her first "customer." Then she gambled her entire future on him returning... and lost when he was sent away against his will. By the time he returned, Granny simply told him, "She's gone!" No explanation. No closure. NOTHING. And here's the heartbreaking part about Lakan and Maomao! Lakan believed Jinshi had essentially BOUGHT Maomao, possibly as a political hostage against him or for his own amusement. He had NO IDEA Jinshi actually HIRED her and that she stayed willingly! Remember his shock when Jinshi carried an injured Maomao after the ritual? Or how suspiciously he looked at Jinshi during their chess scene? From Lakan's perspective, his daughter was trapped in servitude again, just like when she was kidnapped in episode 1! He's been making Jinshi's life HELL trying to force him to release her, not realizing she doesn't need rescuing. What looked like creepy, obsessive behavior was actually a father's horribly misguided attempt to SAVE his daughter. Poor Lakan. A victim of circumstances, guilt, and misunderstandings. He even embraces that feared "weirdo" persona as a defense mechanism. If everyone already sees him as a monster, why not play the part? And Fengxian's fate is just as devastating. After losing her gamble on Lakan, her illness progressed, eventually affecting her mind. In her despair, she harmed herself and cut off the tip of baby Maomao's pinky. Maomao was then raised by the courtesans until Luomen adopted her, making her an UNOFFICIAL (bastard) part of the LA family through both her biological father and adoptive uncle, even if she's not recognized as part of the bloodline since her biological father and mother didn't get married. One last fun detail: Pay attention to the chess pieces Lakan associates with Jinshi and Gaoshun. VERY telling of how he sees their positions in the political hierarchy compared to the default Chess board. :) I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE LIKE NOW!! HAHA 😭

I've recently been following a reactor who is a doctor. He's been reacting to this show, and he said that if you lose just the tip of a finger (there must be at least part of the nail left), it can grow back, including the bone and nerves. This works best in younger children (under 11).

These episodes are so sad, they make me cry every single time! The story of Maomao's parents is so tragic 😭

HollowedSlayer

Next episode gonna need the tissues on standby lol.

FINALLY, The episode that reframes THE ENTIRE SHOW SO FAR. I knew you two would be in the feels from this one this KILLED ME on release. The show does such a good job making you feel uneasy with Lakan and make you hate him and then BOOM.

Mad Man Moon

Face-blindness is a real thing (called Prosopagnosia), I think that's what Lakan has, not just that his eyesight is bad. This episode always hits me even seeing it many times. I remember the first time I was broken because of how much I thought I hated him, then I saw his story and I just bawled.

I can't watch this episode or the next one without crying my eyes out, especially the next one!

One thing from previous episodes that may help. Whenever it was mentioned that the weirdo or monocle client wanted to buy out a courtesan, it was Lakan wanting to buy Maomao. I believe he mistakenly thinks she is a courtesan or in training. As her father, he would want to buy her out to keep her from that life. Maomao is so independent that the idea of being bought, even by her biological father, probably fuels some of her dislike of him.

Like others have said, the Lakan twist is so incredible. There are two moments in season one that hit me hard: Lakans episodes and Lihaku turning down the money, as a man they felt so real. Next season it only gets better!

Paulo

I’m not ok.

One of my favorite little details in this episode is that both games Lakan won against Maomao he used the chariot piece to get checkmate which is the piece that he uses to represent Luomen (his uncle).
