Some more facts! (let me know if this is a bother!!) Throwing salt before a sumo match is a Shinto ritual that is used to purify the ring and banish evil spirits, as well as a prayer for physical safety so that they don't get injured. A fun fact in a fun fact: throwing salt actually is a special ritual only high ranking wrestlers are allowed to do! I wonder if Luffy knew that hahah Yokozuna is the highest rank of wrestlers, and they have super high social status. It means that they tie a super heavy ceremonial rope around their waist. Because of their status, they're expected to retire if they lose, they don't really get demoted. Urashima probably said that everyone is lower class to him because of his Yokozuna status. Samurai are also pretty high in rank though. Remember the frog from Water 7? His name is Yokozuna, probably in respect to his train wrestling! In Edo Japan, a topknot, or "chonmage" is so important it's another form of showing pride (surprise surprise). It became a symbol of honor and status, and getting it cut off was PUBLIC SHAME, a career-ending move. In other words, Urashima got DONE BAD by these guys this episode.

I was stationed in Japan for a year and they had a sumo channel that had all the past sumo fights so watching them do that performative balancing act was hilarious because it’s absolutely that way in matches I’ve watched.
