Don't forget that the facts are told from the perspective of what the characters think. Putting aside Maomao's theory about Ah-Duo's baby swap, we are seeing the internal thoughts of Jinshi, who he thinks he is, and who people are to him based on the rumors or data that he knows. All characters are unreliable narrators until the facts are confirmed outside of just their perspective. Keep that in mind for this latter part of the season or you might get confused by what seems to be contradictions, but they are actually just different perspective views. Also, the emperor just playfully teasing Jinshi in a dad jokes kind of vibe was hilarious this episode. The colorblindness trait used as a way to identify a rare condition to slowly take over the country over many generations is a long slow burn of a plan plotted ages ago. Another key note to remember from this episode is that the former emperor became the ruler by default. They mentioned the past epidemic and how the former emperor was ill-prepared and weak with a taste for younger women, while the former empress wielded the power by proxy behind the scenes. We finally get an explanation that the former emperor was just thrown into that role unprepared because all of his siblings died. Maomao calls out that it is because the royal bloodline got a bit too thick recently. Close relatives marrying each other compromised their immune systems, leaving them defenseless against the epidemic that happened over thirty years ago.

You are going to need a notebook and take notes of the names in this arc to avoid mix ups and confusiosn and timeline of who's who and what titles they have held, and relationships with eachother. Emperess Dowager (in current daily conversations) would refer to the one that had the angry look on her face now, the one who is the current emperor's mother, because her husband (former emperor) passed away, and she's the mother of the current emperor. The former FORMER old woman WOULD have been the emperess dowager at the time except that she retained so much power (and you clocked that the former emperor looked "weak" and "pathetic") so she was never called emperess dowager (even though she should have been, but she was called EMPERESS (period) because she was feared and never lost the illusion of control through her son, the former emperor.

I was about to comment that but you wrote it first. That is the definition of this show 🤣

Honestly, I highly recommend drawing a family tree for the royal family because yes, it can get really confusing with the names and ambiguity around who knows what. Trust me, I had tried doing it in my head many times and only ended up going in circles 😂 Part of that confusion comes from the fact that all the characters have their own "truths" on what did or did not happen, and it has you second guessing information you previously thought was correct. This episode is very fun because it provides a lot more context on how the royal line is established and digs more into the Emperor as a character, and it feels like it makes the true duties Jinshi may have to face more of a reality. It's a nice episode that explores his side of things more. Some interesting episodes coming up! Can't wait :)

Something that might help - Back in episode 4 with the mirrors, I believe Gaoshon was presenting a hypothetical theory with the twins and the pregnancy. But it was actually a way to ask Maomao's help to solve a puzzle involving the envoys. I assume they had surveillance on the envoys. They then discovered one of envoys got out and met with someone. There was a quick flash of an envoy meeting with someone earlier in the episode. Rather than admit they were monitoring the envoys, Jinshi/Gaoshon use the story of the twins. I imagine they have to ask Maomao's help in roundabout ways. There may be details she should not know or they want to keep Maomao's involvement a secret. If you keep that in mind, you may see other instances where Jinshi gets her help that way.

Here is a quick little reference quide for the royals in this episode. Former Empress Dowager - Old Lady - Former Emperor's Mother - Deceased Former Emperor - Old Man - Current Emperor's Father and Jinshi's "Father" - Deceased Empress Dowager - Pretty Woman with little Jinshi - Wife of Former Emperor and current Emperor's Mother and Jinshi's "Mother". I believe they will use "former, previous, predecessor" when referring to the first two and usually when Empress Dowager is mentioned it is referring to the current one. Former Empress Dowager instituted the policy of having eunuch's in the rear palace and the current Empress Dowager ended that policy.

A bit of background on red/green color blindness, which is by far the most common kind. Color vision works by having three different types of cone-shaped cells in the retina, each sensitive to different wavelengths of light (which we see as red, green, and blue individually). The sensitivity, when plotted, makes a bell-shaped curve, where the peak is at the color in question. If the gene that makes the pigment is mutated to shift that curve, however, it can overlap with a neighboring pigment's curve. That's what happens with red/green color blindness - the peaks of each curve are too close together, so they can't be distinguished. As it happens, both of the genes for red-sensitive and green-sensitive pigments are on the X chromosome. Because females get two copies, they are usually only color blind if both of those copies have the defect, as the normal copy of the chromosome will produce the correct pigments (different X inactivation patterns can affect this, however, but that's going too far afield). Males only have the one X chromosome that they receive from their mothers. So if that chromosome has the defect, they are color blind. That's why it's more prevalent among males than females by more than a factor of ten. The relevance to this show is that for a concubine to have color blindness, it almost certainly means she has two defective X chromosomes, meaning there is a 100% chance she will pass color blindness on to her son. So having that rule in place ensures the trait will be passed on to the next emperor. All that said, it's entirely pointless, as the only gene being preserved that way is the one for color blindness. Every other gene from the Mother Royal's line will have thinned out, which is the case for every ancestor. The notion of carrying a "bloodline" on for generations is just vain fantasy.

22:00 That story was a facade. He was asking how a woman could sneak out to meet someone under those circumstances, as was shown at the very beginning of the episode.

26:30 That's the current empress dowager (i.e. mother of the current emperor and of Jinshi). Don't forget that the idea that two babies were swapped shortly after birth is just a notion that Maomao came up with. It is not an established fact. What is established is that Jinshi does not think that's the case, though the idea seems to have occurred to him at some point, only to be dismissed as foolish.
