I guess you already figure it out but the final game arena is another reference to Alice in Wonderland, they play the game, have a tea and everything

The way I understand it the king of spades sees his game as mercy, and in a way it is, it is a quick death, I'd rather died from a bullet (fast and without suffering) than acid pouring down on me or any other crazy stuff we have seen. Also I think he referred to both instancies when he said "it is the only way to protect you", in the present for the reason I already explained and in his flashback, the way I understand it, either the other guy was a comrade of his or part of the enemy lines but either way he gave him the gun to end it, to end his suffering. I think in the flashback he probably wanted to save the guy but didn't have the means to so the better help he could give him was that, to end it. Of course all of this is just my opinion, I could be completely wrong🤣🥰
