A little BONUS post for you this week!

Have you watched the new Spider-verse movie?!

If you haven't yet, go see it!

Now, I'm not a big superhero movie fan...

I do like Batman (the most recent one is probably my favourite now), I do like Iron Man and I do like Spiderman. Everything else, I'm just tired of. Especially now that we have all this multiverse stuff. No thank you.

But the new Spider-verse movie is just glorious to watch. Even if you don't like superhero movies, this movie is just a wonderful work of visual art. Sony have really pushed the medium of animation and are doing really exciting things with it.

The whole time I was watching it on the big screen, I was just thinking...I want to go draw now!

And lucky for me I remembered that I had access to a Spider-man themed gesture class that I hadn't watched yet. (see details below)

I had so much fun doing these! The model was great and the character was fresh in my mind from watching the movie.

Costumed gesture drawing is a whole other kettle of fish to drawing nudes. Same principles apply of course, but the costumes really trick your mind and challenge your process. If you've never tried costumed gesture before, I recommend it.

I do most of my costumed gestures through Disney animator Todd Bright's website. He has several workshops, including a Saturday morning live class, where he has a live model in camera, with 2 different views. He chooses a new theme every week and has a good variety of models.

In the past themes have included Beetlejuice, a Geisha, an Ancient Greek lady, a Gunslinger, Hercules, John Smith, Legolas, Madame Mim, Mary Poppins, Queen of Hearts, Regency, a Silk Artist, Steampunk, Sarah Connor, a Mermaid... and those are just the ones I've attended!

The best thing is that if you can't attend, all the sessions are recorded so you can come back to them. I was on holiday back in February when they did Spider-man, but I was able to return to the recording this week to play.

You can see more examples of the costumed gesture drawings on my Instagram.

Are you into superhero stories? What's your favourite?

Love these <3 and I love super hero stories! personally can't get enough of them haha but at the very top of my probably too long of a favourite list, has to be the Spiderverse! those movies are just amazing, soo beautiful to watch. I always feel so inspired by the end wanting to draw but don't quite feel like my skills are there to fully express myself yet which is why I'm here :) That being said the idea of doing costumed and charactered gestures sounds like the perfect challenge to push myself in that direction. Thanks for sharing Gilllian!

Glad to hear that you find those movies inspiring too. Costumed gesture drawing definitely helps you find the character and exaggeration more easily, I recommend it!
