A record breaking draw-along this month!

Getting feedback on your work (gesture or otherwise) is a really great way to improve your skills quickly. If you've been thinking of submitting for the draw-along challenge but feel shy or not ready, I encourage you to just submit, there is literally nothing to lose!

The above photo is the reference the artists tackled, not an easy one to say the least! But all the artists experimented and leant into the pose. See what they did in the video and see what tips I gave them for future studies.

The PSD is attached below for you to download and explore the notes more closely.

Here are the notes I gave to each artist:

In this last example, Victoria showed us how she took the gesture and applied it to a character design. This is a very cool idea and I wonder if there are more of you out there who would like to see an example of how to do this?

Let me know in the comments below!

Gillian Gestures - Draw-along Feedback - August 2023

Victoria Ong

Yeah I'd love to figure out how to apply it to character :)

Bri

I would love to see an applied character design to a gesture! I think what Victoria did for her gesture is a great and fun idea and helps tell a story with the pose. Will be incorporating that in my gestures.

your shoulder girdle video couldn't have come at a better time. I really struggled to understand what was going on in this pose (as you can see XD) but I also wanted to exaggerate her reach forward anyway since we're here to learn! thanks so much Gillian <3 also inspired to try the character design approach :)

Nicole Guerrero

Hi! I know it's been a while! but I wanted to answer your question on my drawing, I did the pose on around 10 minutes. And yes! I would love to improve catching the feeling of the pose, I feel I stick a bit on how I'm used to draw (more silhouetted), but I'll keep practicing. Thanks so much for your feedback Gillian! (oh and I would love to see an applied character design too c: )

Ah I thought so! As a challenge, try setting a timer for 3 minutes and try to capture the pose in less time to find more of that rhythm and flow and energy in the pose.
