In the spirit of a fresh new year and a fresh new start for many of us...I've taken these poses back to the fundamentals.

No matter what level you are at, it's always great to come back to the fundamentals once in a while. Often when we level up and we get stuck, it's actually something as foundational as the lines of action or the bean that is getting in the way of our progress.

Think about these fundamentals like a scale practise in music or the verb conjugations in language. They are the building blocks for all the fancy stuff.

New sticker friend from Japan!

This video is featuring model Sara from The Dynamic Muse. All of these poses are standing and fairly straight forward, which gives us the chance to really check in with our basic techniques.

In the video I discuss:

  • lines of action

  • bean

  • exaggeration

  • clarity

  • awareness

Gesture Notes

I've included a vertical plumb line alongside both the photo and the sketch to show how moving the figure left and right more in exaggeration is applied.

Materials:

  • Newsprint paper

  • Mitsubishi coloured pencil, black.

My goal is to do less copying. I have some questions - how do you think of (half)blind drawing?

Simone

-how do you think about quick timed poses? Thank you.

How quick?! I think it’s good to include a mix of timings in your practice, from 30 seconds to 3 mins or more.

Hi Gillian. Thanks for the post/video and as well great work. I'm investigating on-line gesture sketch library's and have two I'm looking at. One is Dynamic Muse, the other is Grafit studio. If you had to chose one what would you recommend ? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi Bill! That’s great to hear you’re signing up to an online library. Both are great! Grafit: they have LOADS of content and you can buy individual packs, and they often have generous discounts too. I e been using them for months but I’m sometimes limited by the body types they offer. Mostly white model, strong male bodies and slim female bodies. Dynamic Muse: offer an annual subscription for about $50CAD. Their models are clothed in underwear and have more diversity in the body types. However their library is much smaller, but still plenty to get you drawing. I think they have less than 10 models but lots of photos! Both are great, it depends on what you like to draw!

Hi Gillian! Thanks for getting back to me. What do I like to draw and am I looking for? Oh boy but here goes. I'm looking for, as a source of inspiration, male/female costumed models who over the course of, for example, twenty-one minutes (broken down into three-minute intervals) use broadly caricatured / acting poses to sequential tell a story, whatever the story maybe it may be i.e. getting out of bed in the morning, stretching / yawning and going thru the morning routine, drinking coffee, reading the paper etc. Might be hard to find but here is hoping. A story arc would be for me, very important. I did come across a site that may be of interest to you called “Quick Poses” - https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed - it is free and you can set up parameters – male/female – costumed -and as well time the amount of images - x number of images over x number of minutes in x timed intervals. I hope this makes sense. A sidebar – I shared or think I shared an image to your Instagram account. A drawing by my first gesture sketch drawing instructor – Diana Coco Russell. The both of you should get connected. Look her up, she is a protégé of Walt Stanchfield, studied with him at Disney Feature Animation.

I don't know if you have heard of Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School. When the chapter here in Ottawa was active I attended on a regular basis. It was right up my alley drawing wise. The Ottawa chapter closed a few years ago. I looked into resurrecting it but then Covid yadda, yadda, yadda. Still think about doing that, it was great fun and had a strong Ottawa art community following. Ottawa chapter Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/groups/148026347036

I’ve been told about this in Ottawa. I think it stopped before I lived here but I have attended in Montreal and London, UK. Would love to get one set up here again!

Ah if this is what you’re looking for I think Grafit is probably better for you, much more character driven as it is created by video game artists.

Hi Gillian. Thanks for the feedback re: Grafit. About Dr. Sketchy's I'll dig out my notes, I was corresponding with them for a bit and we'll let you know what's involved. I would also like to get the Ottawa Chapter up and running again. When it was active they met once a month in the Byward Market however given the market's reputation of late that might not be a good idea if this moves forward. I was thinking The Atomic Rooster on bank street might be a alternative site. Just a thought.
