Welcome to our first Master Study Monday! Today I'm painting Claude Monet's beautiful masterpiece, Woman with a Parasol, using watercolor while exploring one of the most important lessons Impressionism has to teach us.

Monet wasn't simply painting a woman standing in a field. He was painting a fleeting moment of sunshine, breeze, color, and atmosphere. Instead of focusing on every detail of the subject, he captured the way light danced across fabric, grass, and sky. His paintings remind us that what we see is often shaped more by light than by the objects themselves.

Remember, a master study isn't about making a perfect copy. It's about slowing down, asking questions, and learning from the choices made by some of history's greatest painters. Every brushstroke teaches us something new.

I'd love to know in the comments:When you look at this painting, what catches your eye first—the woman, the landscape, or the light?

Learning From Monet: Painting Light Instead of Objects

Welcome to our first Master Study Monday! Today I'm painting Claude Monet's beautiful masterpiece, Woman with a Parasol, using watercolor while exploring one of the most important lessons Impressionism has to teach us. Monet wasn't simply painting a woman standing in a field. He was painting a fleeting moment of sunshine, breeze, color, and atmosphere. Instead of focusing on every detail of the subject, he captured the way light danced across fabric, grass, and sky. His paintings remind us that what we see is often shaped more by light than by the objects themselves. As I recreate this iconic painting, we'll talk about how light changes color, softens edges, creates movement, and brings a painting to life. Whether you're just beginning your watercolor journey or you're looking to strengthen your observational skills, studying the masters is one of the best ways to grow as an artist. This month's Patreon theme is Light & Glow, and throughout July we'll be studying four master artists who were exceptional at capturing light in their work. Every Monday we'll complete a new master study that explores a different aspect of light and glow—from warm sunshine and shimmering reflections to glowing skies and luminous color. By painting along with these masters, you'll begin to train your eye to see light the way they did and learn techniques you can use in your own artwork. If you'd like to paint along with us, I'd love to have you join my Patreon community! Members can download the monthly Light & Glow prompts and follow this month's lessons as we learn by doing, one painting at a time. Remember, a master study isn't about making a perfect copy. It's about slowing down, asking questions, and learning from the choices made by some of history's greatest painters. Every brushstroke teaches us something new. If you enjoy learning through master studies, be sure to subscribe and join me each Monday in July as we discover new techniques, artists, and creative inspiration together. I'd love to know in the comments: When you look at this painting, what catches your eye first—the woman, the landscape, or the light? Happy painting!
