While I do enjoy Wan's story, it does irk me a bit that the previously blue-and-orange morality of the spirits was turned into a more good-vs-evil morality with Raava and Vatu. Love the spirit wilds though

As I said last time, 5 and 6 are my least favorite episodes across both series. Firstly, Mako is a massive hypocrite and the show doesn’t point this out. In 5 Korra goes to Iroh because she’s desperate to get help for her family and her tribe, who are in danger of being wiped out, and Mako sells her out to the president because it’s his duty as a cop. He breaks up with her because they’re both putting their jobs ahead of their relationship. (And of course Korra was wrong for throwing his desk.) Then in 6 Mako deliberately disobeys the chief of police and puts his job at risk because he’s desperate to prove his suspicions about Varrick correct and help Asami save her company. And I’m not at all blaming Asami, she has no idea what all is going on. Another thing that really bothers me is how Bolin is portrayed in 6. He kisses Ginger against her will while she’s tied to a table, and again the show doesn’t paint this as wrong in anyway. In fact, Varrick decides to write the kiss into the script, despite pointing out how illogical it is! Sigh. At least we’re over this hurdle.

It’s easy to remember the name of the first avatar. He was number Wan.

So the Avatar Cycle began with fire. I remember reading somewhere that it’s estimated there have been between 180-200 avatars in the last 10,000 years. I think it involved counting the statues that can be seen at the Southern Air Temple. Mathematically speaking this tracks pretty well. Cycles of 4, starting with fire and currently on water: 183 (46th cycle): avg lifespan = 54.6 187 (47th cycle): avg lifespan = 53.5 191 (48th cycle): avg lifespan = 52.4 195 (49th cycle): avg lifespan = 51.3 199 (50th cycle): avg lifespan = 50.3 Regardless, Roku saying the avatar has mastered the elements a thousand times in a thousand lifetimes isn’t possible. It would mean that multiple avatars died before the age of 10, and we know Aang was the youngest airbending master ever at the age of 12. But there are multiple timelines from Book 1 of ATLA that don’t line up with later seasons. At least in this case we can just explain it as Roku being hyperbolic, because that line sounded way better than “200 times in 200 lifetimes.”

It’s highly speculated (not sure if it’s been confirmed) that the spirit oasis Wan was at is the same spirit pool at the Northern Water Tribe. The landscape is very similar, besides the lack of snow (which, the southern spirit portal also didn’t have any snow 10,000 years ago), and the aye-aye spirit said the water had special healing properties.

I love that Raava calls the lion turtle "ancient one"; that to the lion turtles, even the primordial spirits of light and darkness seem like children.

I loved your insight at the end. Basically describing the situation with the US congress lol rip

My first introduction to the word “avatar” was from ATLA, so I just assumed it meant master of all the elements, or maybe a master of multiple things. It wasn’t until either James Cameron’s movie came out or when I started playing more video games that I realized it meant like a physical form or some other representation of someone else, or being controlled by someone else. Before I saw Beginnings Part 2 I had never gone back to think about why the avatar is called that, but once I realized that the avatar spirit was actually a separate identity from the person I finally understood.
