These two episodes were absolutely devastating for me to watch. I knew something was coming, but I wasn't expecting this! Enjoy :)

Happy New Year! Great reaction. Definitely an emotional couple of episodes. You were exactly right -- about the calm before the storm. Got to love the humor, however, of the other friends listening to the whole thing in the bedroom. And, once again, the excellent writing -- finding that balance between the hard lessons of life, mixing with the humorous side. I always look forward to your take on things. Well done.

watching this back for the 12498239th time i'm realizing they're fighting about two very different things and that's the core issue here. for rachel - she sees ross's mindset as this: he thought she was sleeping with mark, stewed in it, and then immediately went with another woman as "revenge" and to "get back at" rachel for hurting him. which, i think he needs to be honest with himself here, is exactly what he did. he wanted to hurt her like he thought she was hurting him. for ross though - he sees it as being more about the technicality of "break up" and "on a break." that's his entire argument. whereas for rachel, her side of the fight is "you not only hurt me but you sought out and wanted to hurt me" whereas ross's entire side of the argument is "but YOU said we were on a break" and to me, that was rachel's final straw. when she realized that he wasn't seeing her side of it, that he wasn't getting it, that he genuinely sought to hurt her and instead of owning up to that, he made the entire argument and his defense entirely about a technicality. and i think this is where ross fails here. he gets so caught up in little things like the terminology of break up and on a break, so caught up in having to be right and focused on all the wrong things. i think that's his ultimate downfall, maybe even moreso than the physical act of cheating. the entire night he made it seem like he was tired and frustrated at her for not just forgiving him already and moving on with things. then when he saw she wasn't just getting over it, he kept defending himself but defending the wrong thing. he got so wrapped up in the technicality that's all he focused on, as opposed to her pain and how he'd hurt her. wow this comment got waaay longer than i expected but i've been stewing over this tonight and wanted to put my thoughts somewhere lol

Happy New Year Oscar ♥️ I agree with everything you said about Ross being more interested in getting out of trouble than actually own up to what he did and apologize sincerely. Not once did he seem to realize how hurt she was that he hurt her in a way she never imagined and the worst part is he didn’t just make a mistake he did it out of sheer spite cause he heard Mark in the background. That episode is always a hard watch but David and Jen did such a wonderful job I couldn’t help but look forward to this reaction even though I knew what was coming.

Absolutely one of the hardest episodes to watch. Every moment of their fight and conversation felt so real. Also, yeah Joey is actually the least to be the cheating type if you asked me. Especially if he was going to be dating someone who was a friend first.

Hi Oscar, Happy New Year!🎊🎉 Ughhh… I’ve been dreading these 2 episodes. You’ve been so invested in the “will they won’t they” storyline and you seemed happy when they did finally become a couple. I agree with you and also everything that commenter Emily said. What’s also interesting to me is why Ross didn’t understand Rachel’s work emergency. Remember, their first date had to be changed because something happened at Ross’ museum at the last minute that he needed to fix and they got caught in the display window? Rachel understood and didn’t get upset because she knows how important his work is to him. With that said, he should understand when Rachel had a work emergency and had to change their plans for later that night when she got home or the following night without barging into her office. If he was dealing with an emergency at work, he couldn’t have Rachel showing up to have a picnic. Sometimes life won’t allow us to celebrate something on THAT specific day. It’s not uncommon for someone to go through a busy time at work and in Rachel’s situation, it did seem like something they would need to discuss because it seemed like she’d been working late hours a lot, but I also didn’t like the way Ross just dismissed her career like it wasn’t as important as being a Paleontologist. Like she said, she found something that she’s good at and important to her, but she needs to find balance. She has definitely grown a lot from the spoiled girl whose daddy paid for everything who we met in the first episode. I also agree that David and Jennifer did such a great job during their fight and as many times as I’ve seen this, that scene with Ross telling her he can’t imagine not being with her and kneeling down with his arms around her made me tear up right along with you. I would love to see bloopers from this episode. It’s going to be fun watching the show with you moving forward… will they get back together? What’s going to happen next with the friends? I think S4 and S5 might be my favorite full seasons, but there are some great storylines to come!

I don't think it was purely a technicality though, you have to understand how jealous and insecure Ross is. That isn't an excuse either, but as soon as he heard Mark's voice on the phone, he really did think she had already chosen him after the "break up" & that their relationship was over. Even when Rachel comes over in the morning, she says, can I be your girlfriend again? Clearly implying they weren't together at that moment. It's still wrong because of the pain it caused Rachel, but cheating is not the proper word in my view, I don't think there is a word for it because of the exceptionally weird and unique set of circumstances that led up to it.

Aww dude you were so happy in the beginning but I knew what was coming. I completely agree that once Ross slept with someone else nothing else mattered. I don't care if they were or weren't on a break. It doesn't justify Ross sleeping with someone else THE SAME NIGHT. EVEN IF they had broken up FOR GOOD it would not be okay, let alone just "on a break". That doesn't mean Rachel did nothing wrong or that Ross didn't have a reason to be upset, but he DID overreact. I get he was burned after Carol, but his trust issues were HIS issues that HE needed to work on. Rachel was not Carol. Yes, Rachel was prioritising her job over Ross, which was wrong. But how many times have men prioritised their job over their partner/family and no one seems to think that is a problem? It's such a double standard. Rachel finally had a job she loved and instead of supporting her, Ross went all crazy jealous over Mark who Rachel wasn't even interested in. He should've trusted Rachel regardless of Mark (btw I think we all hate Mark as he obviously had bad intentions). Ironically, Ross's jealousy and paranoia just drove her further away from him and into Mark's arms (even though nothing happened). Sure, Rachel could've been more grateful and payed more attention to him than her work, but he was too needy and clingy that it just drove her away even more. Yet she was not the one who cheated, Ross was. Because he thought Rachel was cheating on him. Just the thought of her being with someone else upset him so much (even though they were on a 'break') he went to bed with another woman. And, EVEN IF Rachel had in fact slept with Mark it still doesn't justify him doing the same thing. The main problem is the lack of communication. Ross didn't even listen to what Rachel had to say, he just heard Mark's voice and hung up. Rachel could have been more attentive to Ross's feelings and Ross could have just been honest with Rachel. Instead he jumped to conclusions and went to bed with someone else. He was also so adamant to hide it from her and not taking responsibility which made it SO much worse. I will always love Roschel but I will never pretend that their relationship wasn't unhealthy at times. And even though they both made mistakes in the relationship, I am 100% Team Rachel on this. Anyway, I think we can all agree those scenes in Monica and Rachel's apartment are absolutely heartbreaking. In fact, it was so emotional that both David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston couldn't stop crying while filming it. On another note, "With or Without You" by U2 is the song playing at the end of 3x15 when Ross tells Chloe he likes that song and Rachel is at home calling Ross. It's the same song Ross dedicated to Rachel on the radio in 2x08 "The One with the List". Furthermore, the song playing in the recap in 3x16 is the same song that played when Ross and Rachel had their first kiss in 2x07 "The One Where Ross Finds Out". Happy new year 🎉 Hope you had a wonderful holiday ❤

Your reactions are very insightful. I love that you got so invested in these characters that you were affected by the episodes.

Honestly, ”TO the Morning After” is my favourite of the entire show. Not because R&R broke up (although I did always think they were bad together and oftentimes quite toxic), but because I think it’s genious how they did it. Instead of having R&R fighting as the A-plot while the other four were off on their own B- or even C-plots, they kept all six friends in Monica’s apartment. Thanks to that the episode felt cohesive and it made the drama work so much better when we never left the apartment in the second half. They also did a wonderful job writing the R&R plotline in a way that you felt the drama and how painful it was, yet at the same time they didn’t forget the comedy (and the jokes didn’t take away from the seriousness). Cox, Kudrow, Perry, and LeBlanc gave great performances, but Aniston and Schwimmer were simply perfection. IMHO the quality of this episode is unmatched within the show.

im rewatching the show myself, and i couldn't watch these episodes alone, they make me so sad lol. u got me through this part of season 3 😭

This never bothered me. I was never into Ross and Rachel as a couple like that. Also she was kissing Ross when he actually had a girlfriend. So I just cant feel bad for her.

Ross cheated on Julie with Rachel. Then he does the same to her. What goes around comes around. The technicality of being on a break doesn’t count because they spoke on the pay phone and Rachel obviously was talking to him as if they were still in a relationship. There was no actual declaration that the relationship was over and there was some sort of meeting of the minds that there was still something to salvage. Ross just used this technicality because that’s what self-centered cheaters do. So he was having a tough time, grew up nerdy, and didn’t have luck with women… everybody has problems. His behavior is consistently awful throughout this series.
