I have to find the interview but Vince basically said the thought process around this time was to make albums that sound like soundtracks. It kinda influenced Kendrick on the Black Panther album. Alyssa is Vince's ex. That's actually Amy Winehose speaking in an interview.

Vince is just different in general. He wanted movie music and made the whole album wanting these songs in movies/shows (which they was). I recommend Summertime ‘06, it’s probably his most introspective piece of work to date.
