Season 3 starts now and… we get Superman right off the rip?! I’m cool with that! This was a fun episode as usual, but now I’m wondering… are we actually going to see that fight with Brainiac? I’m gonna guess probably not, right? 😭

Drop your thoughts below and enjoy the ride!

The “Pharoah” character in the prologue is a silver age villain known as King Tut. The prologue itself was a direct adaption of an old comic involving him, and King Tut was also featured in Adam West’s Batman series. Batman’s kryptonite armor was lifted and originates from Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ and, as you said, was later adapted in Zach Snyder’s ‘Batman vs Superman’. Golden + Silver Age Superman was absolutely busted and overpowered as a character. Over the decades he basically just obtained every power under the sun, including many bizarre and super niche ones. Basically, if a situation called for him to have an ability, he would. The Bronze + Dark Ages really worked to strip back Superman’s layers and condense his abilities back to a reasonable range. Superman: The Animated Series was notable for nerfing Superman to an incredible degree in comparison to his past iterations so as to make him actually have challenges in combat. Notable members of Superman’s rogues gallery that we see in this episode include: - Lex Luthor (old school Lex, particularly Lex of the Golden Age, was actually a bit pudgy and broad. He was meant to be a fat cat elite) - Brainiac (with Koko) - Metallo - El Gar-Kur - Mr. Mxyzptlk - Toyman We also see the bottled city of Kandor in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Kandor was actually the capital city of Krypton and was shrunken and collected by Brainiac prior to Krypton’s destruction.

I grew up with the DCAU, so I'm used to thinking of Brainiac as an evil AI. I often forget that he was originally depicted as an organic alien who shrunk cities from other planets. I love how the writers made up for lost time by throwing every Superman reference and trope they could fit into this one episode.

KrakenKing

Neat little linguistic fact, the term “brainiac” in reference to someone smart actually originated through the Brainiac character.

JD Dumas

I vaguely remember hearing that somewhere before.

Anriku

I'm sorry that I didn't watch it. 😭

I like the 'slimmer' Lex myself. Interesting Silver AGE design though.

Anriku

I always knew him as AI, too.

KrakenKing

It’s a testament to the popularity of that one version of the character, given that Brainiac has not been an AI instead of an alien before or since.

I’m honestly surprised Batman didn’t have kryptonite to deal with Superman. On a side note, I actually heard about comics, starring Lois Lane, where she tried to trick Superman into marrying her. Very whacky scenarios that don’t paint her in the best light lol.
