We just wrapped up a fantastic watch. Between the incredible introduction of Poison Ivy and the mature themes in The Underdwellers, this show continues to impress. I’m definitely left wondering how soon we'll be seeing Poison Ivy again... she stole the show!

As for the Sewer King? Yeah, let’s keep him away. XD

Drop your thoughts below and enjoy the ride!

Weird fact about me the sewer king episode is the only episode of the show I can clearly remember from my childhood. I do not know why.

KrakenKing

He’s just such a bizarre and out of place character that he’s hard to forget.

JD Dumas

The thing with this show is that many of the costumed villains start out as people with legitimate grievances. But it's their reactions to said grievances that makes them villains. They think that because they were once victims that it's okay for them to victimize others. Poison Ivy is one example of this. As for the Sewer King. You'll be delighted to know that this is his only appearance. And while we never learn what became of him, I have a theory. See, my head canon has always been that even though Batman refused to take his life, he still found a way to make him suffer. So, as Bruce Wayne, he used his money and influence to make sure the court declared him legally sane, so he'd be sent to prison instead of Arkham. And as we all know, men like him don't tend to last long in American Prisons.

‘Pretty Poison’ is a top tier episode and a perfect introduction to a villain who the crew of BTAS completely reinvented after 30 years of convoluted nonsense; Pamela Isley, seductive botanist extraordinaire with lethal chemistry to boot. As we see here, though, she is still very much a normal human. Normal skin tone, still susceptible to her own poisons, and no actual control over her plants, just the knowledge to grow them. Her character will be one of the most fleshed out and developed across the DCAU in terms of those from the Batman sphere. Bruce and Harvey are typically very close friends in most continuities, yes. Even childhood friends in some cases. Gordon, Dent, and Batman sort of act as the holy trinity for Gotham’s more nuanced law-enforcement; the police commissioner who works around and bends the rules to get things done, the DA who prosecutes those too outlandish for most, and the vigilante who tackles dangers too dangerous or too outside the law for the police. I find Harvey’s little monologue about Bruce, parallel to Bruce’s ironic battle as Batman, to be both rather endearing and heartbreaking. They are clearly best friends and trust each other immensely (Bruce even helping fund Harvey’s dream to build a new prison right at the start of his DA career), but still, Harvey doesn’t know everything about Bruce, and Bruce can’t tell him. I don’t have much to say about ‘The Underdwellers’. As much as it was part of this early string of episodes focused on Batman helping kids, I do appreciate the darker message regarding child abuse and neglect, and Batman being so genuinely disgusted and angry with the Sewer King is pretty awesome. Still though, as you’ve seen, overall I can’t give it much more than a low C. The Sewer King’s vocal performance was also a highlight, though. On a side note, that female officer that we see front and center in the police precinct scenes in ‘Pretty Poison’ is actually Renee Montoya. She’s an original character made for the show who has become immensely popular and appeared in a lot of other iterations since, same as Harley Quinn. Shes a great character who is a good foil to Bullock and appears in a good amount of episodes. You’ll get to know her a lot better in the next pair of episodes.

You’re absolutely correct about your first point, to the degree that we literally get an entire episode about it later down the line. I actually love this headcanon, even if I don’t think Bruce (let alone any billionaire) should be influencing the law to any degree like that.

JD Dumas

You mean Renee Montoya. Andrea Beaumont is a completely different original character.

JD Dumas

It's been a while, but I think I know which episode you're talking about. Perhaps you're right. But even if he did end up in Arkham, I doubt he survived for very long. As our dear friend Warren White proved to us, an insanity plea that ends in Arkham is only marginally preferable to the electric chair.

KrakenKing

Starts with a T. 😉

KrakenKing

I was typing that out and I was like “isn’t her name Spanish”? 😭😭😭 I had just watched a Serum Lake video and got the names totally crossed lmao.

JD Dumas

That's the one I was thinking of.

Anriku

He's definitely something. 🤢

Anriku

Thats great. They just can't control their impulses like most criminals, I guess. I look forward to seeing more of their origins. Psychology intrigues me. Always has.

Anriku

I wonder if we will see her get the pale skin and plant control. That'd be sick.

JD Dumas

When you say it like that sounds a bit reductive, but you're not wrong. If abnormal psychology is your thing, then you're in for a treat.

KrakenKing

He’s gonna have a field day with ‘Mad as a Hatter’.

Anriku

Haha, fair enough. Sounds like the show is about to complicate things for me in the best way possible. Can't wait.
